    Lou_Aug2011

    A Message from Louis Provenzano.

Today, September 30th, is a very special day for language professionals around the world.

Today is International Translation Day. Celebrating language professionals since 1953.

A perfect opportunity for me to recognize and thank our company's fine interpreters and translators for the important work that you do each and every day.

Today I will soon join hundreds of interpreters at the 25th annual International Medical Interpreters Association conference, where I will share my thoughts and dreams for the growth, and the certification, of your profession.

I truly envy our interpreters and translators because, as each day ends, you can say you made a difference in the lives of so many.

I also thank those hospitals and healthcare professionals who recognize the importance and value of interpreters as a vital element of the care giving team.

Because, after all, quality care begins with quality communication. One cannot exist without the other.

So, please join me and my colleagues at Language Line Services in celebrating an invaluable and increasingly necessary profession.

On behalf of our company, I promise that we will continue to participate in, contribute to, and advocate for all professional language services.

    Sincerely,

    Louis

    Psychology Today

September 30th is the International Interpreters and Translators Day, and, yes, they are incredibly talented. Enjoy this Psychology Today article by Dr. Francois Grosjean.

Published on September 15, 2011 by Francois Grosjean, Ph.D. in "Life as a Bilingual"

Interpreting is one of the most difficult linguistic skills.

Have you ever sat down in an interpreter's booth, put on the headphones and tried to interpret the incoming speech?

I did when I was a young and rather naive student who thought that being bilingual meant one could interpret simultaneously. No sooner had I started that problems arrived.

As I was outputting the first sentence, the second one was already coming in but I hadn't paid enough attention to it.

I remembered its beginning but not its ending. Very quickly I fell behind and I just couldn't say anything more after a few minutes!

Vietnamese Immigrants in the United States
    Vietnamese Americans

Unlike most of the foreign born from Asia, those from Vietnam came to the United States mainly as refugees and asylum seekers from the mid-1970s onward.

Today, the United States is home to about 1.1 million Vietnamese immigrants, making them the fifth-largest immigrant group in the United States after Mexican, Filipino, Indian, and Chinese immigrants.

The Vietnamese immigrant population grew faster than other immigrant groups during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, but the population has since grown much slower than the overall immigrant population in the United States.

Over half of Vietnamese immigrants reside in California and Texas (for more information on immigrants by state, please see the ACS/Census Data tool on the MPI Data Hub), and nearly one-fifth resides in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Compared to the foreign born overall, the Vietnamese foreign born were less likely to hold a bachelor's degree but had much higher naturalization and home ownership rates.

Read so much more about America's Vietnamese population, its language and culture, here at the Migration Information Source.

FEMA & FCC Unveil New Tip Sheet for Consumers on How to Communicate During Disasters
    FEMA

As part of National Preparedness Month, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released new tips for consumers aimed at preparing them for major disasters when communications networks are more likely to be compromised or damaged.

Nearly one month ago, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake and Hurricane Irene struck the East Coast. In the minutes and hours that followed, mobile networks experienced significant network congestion, temporarily making it harder for millions of people to reach loved ones and emergency services.

This tip sheet aims to help prepare Americans about how to communicate with each other, and loved ones, in the event of another disaster.
