Helping Haiti |
 |
Like so many in the Interpreter
community, we search
for ways to help the Haitian earthquake
survivors.
Not only our Haitian interpreters,
many of whom have friends and family in
Haiti, but all of us want to help.
Here is one way we're helping survivors
and those caring for them...
Effective immediately and at least through
mid-February, Language Line Services is
offering our
customers who are directly engaged in the
Haitian relief efforts:
- Free Haitian language
interpretation for victims and their
caregivers (for the next month; restrictions
do apply)*
- Additional Language Line Dual Handset
phones to aid in efficient communication
- Document translation of short
forms and informational letters into the
Haitian language
- Training for new users of over the
phone interpretation so they can access
Haitian interpreters, including effective
methods in working with those interpreters
In addition, relief agencies aiding the
Haitian people, though not Language Line
Services customers, may also use our
Haitian Creole interpreters at no charge at
least through mid-February*
If your organization, or an
organization you know, is directly aiding
survivors and need access to these Haitian
language services, please contact your
Language Line Services Account Manager or
email us at
disasterrelief@languageline.com
.
Thank you,
Louis Provenzano
President & COO
Language Line Services
* PS: Restrictions do apply. This
offer is limited to Language Line Services
customers and others helping the victims of
this terrible earthquake, not for normal
day-to-day Haitian interpretation needs. We
are hoping that, with your cooperation, we
will be able to facilitate vital
communication to those who need it most at
this time. We are in this together and we
thank you for your support and
understanding.

On Immigration -- Two Migration Policy Institute Reports |
 |
Two studies caught our
eye this month that we thought
would interest you. Both, of course, having
to do with immigration.
One explains how the Mexican
government is helping those who have left
Mexico for the U.S. to integrate in their new
home.
The other report is how immigrants to the
U.S. from all parts of the world may fare if
and when the new Congress Health Plan is
finally passed and carried out.
MPI is an independent, nonpartisan,
nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study
of the movement of people worldwide.
Protection through Integration:
The Mexican Government's Efforts to Aid
Migrants in the United States
By Laureen Laglagaron
Immigrant integration remains largely an
afterthought in US immigration policy
discussions and the country's integration
policies remain chronically underfunded and
limited in scope.
Local and informal actors such as families
and community-based organizations have
historically taken on this responsibility.
However, as this report explores, new
partners are emerging. Mexico's efforts to
help its migrants succeed in the United
States offer a new example of an
immigrant-sending country looking to improve
its emigrants' lives and connect with its
diaspora.
The report examines the evolution of
Mexico's approach to its migrants and details
the activities of Mexico's
Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME)*
in a first-ever attempt
to map the expanding range of IME
educational, health care, financial, and
civic engagement programs.

Immigrants and Health Care
Reform: What's Really at Stake?
By Randy Capps, Marc R. Rosenblum, and
Michael Fix
Health care reform proposals under
consideration in Congress that would exclude
many legal immigrants from core benefits and
impose new verification requirements would
have important spillover consequences for
taxpayers and other health care consumers.
In a new report, MPI's National
Center on
Immigrant Integration Policy offers the
first-ever estimates of:
- The size of uninsured immigrant
populations in major immigrant-destination
states,
- The number of immigrant workers covered
by employer-provided plans, and
- The share of immigrants employed by small
firms likely to be exempted from employer
coverage mandates.
The report, based on MPI analysis of
Census Bureau data, also examines health
coverage for immigrants by legal status, age,
and poverty levels.

Book Review: "Financial Secrets of 100 Chinese Women" |
 |
If your organization markets to and
does business with members of
Chinese-American communities,
particularly the women of those communities,
this
New America Media article and the book it
reviews (Why Chinese Women
Are Not Broke: Real Life Stories and Proven
Keys for Success), is must reading.
Wan Ling Martello might have remained a
behind-the-scenes accountant instead of
becoming the CFO of Wal-Mart International if
she hadnt volunteered for a job no one wanted.
Lily Lee Chen may not have become the first
Chinese female mayor in the United States if
she had not walked door to door in the rain
to register Asian voters in Monterey Park
while sacrificing a pair of shoes in the process.
D. Alice Huang may not have done pioneering
work in the area of pediatric AIDS if she had
listened to people tell her that women dont
make scientists especially Asian women.
These women became successful not
because
they beat the odds, but because they
persevered, were driven by an indefatigable
work ethic, possessed an unstoppable desire
for success and never quit pursuing their
dreams -- core principles that come from
being Chinese women.
Their stories and 97 others are
featured in a
newly-released book Why Chinese Women
Are Not Broke: Real Life Stories and Proven
Keys for Success available at
www.whychinesewomenarenotbroke.com
and on www.amazon.com.
