  • Marketing to Asian Americans - 22-Page Supplement

Special Section on Marketing to Asian Americans Appears in Adweek, Brandweek and Mediaweek

A 22-page special supplement devoted to 'Marketing to Asian Americans', features reasons and resources for reaching this affluent market segment. (Visit www.adweekmedia.com/aw/custom-reports/mtaa/index.jsp to view a free copy of the report.)

The section contains impressive, recent statistics about Asian Americans in the U.S., the fastest growing population of all racial groups, with the highest median household income and with a purchasing power that has grown 71% since 2000.

A number of interesting essays and articles cover topics such as research, media and marketing. The research article highlights the fact that Asian Americans are very responsive to research, especially if a survey or over the phone interview can be conducted in their own language; the language option makes them more comfortable and fewer people drop out of the surveys.

Another article describes the current situation of Asian media in the U.S. In comparison to 200 Asian media properties in 1980, today there are upwards of 800-plus.

The Asian media landscape is substantially different today - there are many more media properties catering to these growing audiences - including broadcast, cable and satellite television, radio and magazines.

EPA Launches New Multilingual Websites in Korean and Vietnamese
    epa

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is launching new consolidated Web sites in Vietnamese and Korean as part of its ongoing effort to provide environmental information in Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese, in addition to English.

These new sites compile EPA multilingual publications and materials in Korean and Vietnamese on a variety of environmental issues such as children's health, indoor air quality in nail salons and dry cleaners, asthma, fish consumption, proper pesticide usage, among others.

These sites also serve as valuable tools in delivering important health and environmental information to the Vietnamese and Korean communities in the United States and worldwide.

This initiative promotes environmental protection in local communities as well as the global environment regardless of language.

The launch of these Web sites coincides with the celebration in the United States of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month during May.

According to the U.S. Census, over 14.9 million U.S. residents trace their roots to Asian countries.

U.S. Hispanic Population Surpasses 45 Million
    census bureau logo

The nation's Hispanic population increased 1.4 million to reach 45.5 million on July 1, 2007, or 15.1 percent of the estimated total U.S. population of 301.6 million.

Newly released figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show that Hispanics remained the largest minority group, with blacks (single race or multiracial) second at 40.7 million in 2007.

With a 3.3 percent increase, Hispanics were the fastest-growing minority group. Asians were the second fastest-growing minority group, with a 2.9 percent population increase during the period.

Overall, the nation's minority population reached 102.5 million in 2007 - 34 percent of the total. California had a minority population of 20.9 million - 20 percent of the nation's total, Texas had a minority population of 12.5 million - 12 percent of the U.S. total.

Highlights from the 2007 census data:

    • Four states and the District of Columbia are regarded as "majority minority," meaning that more than 50 percent of their population consists of non-whites. Hawaii led the nation with a population that was 75 percent minority in 2007, followed by the District of Columbia (68 percent), New Mexico (58 percent), California (57 percent) and Texas (52 percent).
    • California had the largest Hispanic population of any state last year, with 13.2 million people accounting for 36 percent of the total population. Texas was next, with 8.6 million (also 36 percent of the population), followed by Florida, with 3.8 million (21 percent).
    • Texas had the largest numerical increase in Hispanics between 2006 and 2007 (308,000), followed by California (268,000) and Florida (131,000).
    • In New Mexico, Hispanics comprised the highest proportion of the total population, at 44 percent.
    • Illinois' minority population reached 35 percent, ranking it 15th in the nation. The number of blacks (2 million) and Hispanics (1.9 million) was nearly even, although the Hispanic population grew by 3 percent while the black population was nearly unchanged.
    • Nationally, Hispanics were the fastest-growing minority group, with a 3.3 percent population increase. Asians were the second fastest-growing group, with a 2.9 percent increase. The black population grew by 1.3 percent, and the white population grew by 0.3 percent. Native Americans grew by 1 percent and native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders grew by 1.6 percent.
    • Hispanics are considerably younger than other population groups. They had a median age of 27.6, compared with the population as a whole at 36.6. For blacks, the median age was 31.1; for Asians, it was 35.4; and for whites, it was 40.8.
