World's Most Intriguing Words - uitwaaien (Dutch)
    In Other Words

Recently there's been a flood of books (see below) about language and, in particular, the translation (or lack of translation) of words from one language to another.

We've enjoyed these books so much, it occurred to us that you would too.

Let's start with the Dutch verb uitwaaien (oot-vay-en) which is a most useful and attractive word meaning "to walk in the wind for fun." It conjures up a charming image of Dutch people outdoors knowing just how to enjoy the landscape.

From the BBC - "Words and phrases can suggest the character of a nation. The Dutch vocabulary, for instance, seems to confirm the nation's light-hearted reputation."

Here's a similar Dutch delicacy, Uituiken (oot-book-en) (verb). Another "enjoyment" verb like uitwaaien, but this time based on the word for stomach, buik, meaning "to take your time at dinner, relaxing between courses."

It sums up the real Christmas feeling, or gezelligheid, of being together in a feeling of peace and unity between people. With a full stomach, of course.

Both words and commentary come from the very enjoyable book, "In Other Words" by author Christopher Moore (below).

If you're interested in learning - and learning about - more Dutch word, where else to look but Wikipedia.com. Enjoy!
