    Intriguing Words, Revisited
    In Other Words

Following is another excerpt from that wonderful little book with the familiar title...

"In Other Words, A Language Lover's guide to the Most Intriguing Words Around the World".

    Meraki
    (Greek) (meh-ra-kee)(adjective)

This is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love - when you put "something of yourself" into what you are doing, whatever it may be. Meraki is often used to describe cooking or preparing a meal, but it can also mean arranging a room, choosing decorations, or setting and elegant table.

    Nop
    (Laotian) (norp) meh-ra-kee)(noun)

Very similar to the Thai greeting wai, this word embodies the respectfulness and politeness that is second nature to the Southeast Asian community. It is accompanied by a prayerlike, palms-together greeting gesture. You should nopback to someone if they nop you in greeting, but you should refrain if a child does it to you.

And, finally, a word/name we're hearing more of each day...

    Baraka
    (Arabic) (ba-ra-ka) (noun)

Baraka is a word of several meanings. It can represent a state of heightened consciousness or grace achieved through religious fervor involving prayer and dancing. More broadly, a person of character, courage, and selflessness can be considered to possess baraka. It's equivalent in Hebrew is baruch, which means blessed.
