As competitors, our focus is on creating a certain look for the stage. In addition we want to create the best look compared to everyone else who shows up on game day. Even though we can't control who will show up or how they look, we do the best we can to get all our ducks in a row visually. That means the best suits, best abs, best posing, haircuts, manicures, the works. But what about our health and wellness? What about our personal lives? What about our friends, family, and home lives? Is our home a cluttered mess for 12 weeks out of the year? Are our finances a mess because there are just so many expenses? Do we isolate ourselves, in the name of our sport? Some of this may be necessary, but when are we putting our health at risk? How do we know when to slow down, or to stop altogether. Powerful goals have powerful energy. Make sure the next time you step on stage, you are not only looking good, but also feeling well and healthy.
But how do we measure that we are focusing on health? It is easy for me to spew out a laundry list of to do's, for example, drink one gallon of water a day, or remember to get 8 hours of sleep, and be sure to de-stress. But I really want to dive a little deeper here and look at the intentions that we have for ourselves. When we have the intention of winning at all costs, sometimes there is a mentality that something has got to give. That leaves us often overtraining, under eating, feeling tired, grumpy, irritable and just plain not having fun with our competition training. Other indicators are increased financial stress, home life clutter, and in general putting things off until the show is over.
Competing should flow naturally with what you are doing and it should be a healthy hobby that allows you to express who you are and your beauty on the inside and out. Making sure we have time to take care of all the areas of our lives in addition to our contest training will set us up for future success.
