A Message From the Chapter

Happy Birthday Chapter 4!

In September 1982, several outstanding community pediatricians had the vision to form a local AAP Chapter in Orange County, and today it is formally known as the California Chapter 4, American Academy of Pediatrics.  Their vision and pride in the mission of this organization has sustained us and we continue to represent the health and welfare for all children in the county.  We are officially "29" years old, just like the most of us, but those 29 years have seen remarkable changes in health care and as the Chapter continues to grow and seek opportunities to support your needs in the community we hope that you will take advantage of the resources we provide for you through membership and encourage your active participation in the Chapter.

Join me in thanking those individuals that served on the Board of Directors in 1982 and many others that helped to create this organization to serve the needs of the pediatrician and all children in Orange County:

Alberto Gedissman, M.D.                 Chapter President
Bartley Asner, M.D.                         Chapter Vice President
Phyllis Agran, M.D.                          Chapter Secretary
Milton Schwarz, M.D.                       Chapter Past President

Happy Birthday!!
Dian Milton
Executive Director

Legislative Update

Governor Brown has signed three important AAP-CA Bills to protect and promote children's health.  California Children's services saved, SCID added to newborn screening.

1) Seizure Medicine Available in Schools
Groundbreaking student safety legislation authored by Senator Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) has been signed by the Governor. The Governor's signature on SB 161 means that California school employees, who volunteer and are properly trained, will be authorized by law to provide emergency medical assistance to pupils with epilepsy who suffer a seizure while on campus.

Complete article at http://cssrc.us/web/29/news.aspx?id=11364

2) California Children's Services Saved The California Children's Services program for children with serious and chronic conditions (CCS) was scheduled to be rolled into the Medi-Cal Managed Care program at the end of this year for eligible children, which would have eliminated much of CCS as we know it..  AAP-CA had grave concerns about access to pediatric subspecialists and quality of care if this were to occur.  Through legislation just signed by the Governor the important functions of local and statewide CCS have been saved through 2016!

3) New Booster Seat Requirements California's booster seat law has been update to reflect national safety standards and National AAP policy.  Children must now be in booster seats until they reach age eight of four feet nine inches in height.

In addition, the District 9 Advocacy Update for Fall of 2011 has been released.  AAP-CA has had a busy year working with the state legislature in regards to First Five, Medi-Cal and Healthy Families, and Pertussis Vaccination, among others.  To view a brief summary of AAP-CA's advocacy efforts click here.  This update was written on October 5th.

For news on signings and vetoes by Governor Brown, read the SGA Update.
