A Word from the Chapter

School will be ending in a little over one month and the schools and your offices are faced with the daunting task of making sure that all children entering 7th -12th grades in the fall have received their Pertussis vaccinations. This is a mandated requirement by the State of California and you are probably already seeing this new requirement impact your practices. We encourage you and your offices to take the time to notify your patients of this need going forward if you haven't done so already. The schools are making every effort to notify parents of this requirement and are encouraging them to see their primary care physicians now for this immunization need, and not just before school starts.

The chapter will be providing an update on this new requirement (AB 354) on June 4th at the Mile Square Conference Center and we hope that you take the time to join us for this short morning conference.

Thank you for your support

AAP Joins Call for Heightened Pertussis Vaccination

The American Academy of Pediatrics, together with eight nursing, pediatric and physician organizations, is urging health care providers nationwide to encourage patients who have any contact with newborns and infants to get vaccinated for pertussis to stem a nationwide outbreak, including several groups that previously had not been recommended for the vaccine. An advisory letter to member health care professionals outlines the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for pertussis immunization. The letter also encourages health care providers to get their own vaccination, and to use an accompanying dosing guide outlining vaccine type and schedule for various groups.
