Greetings!

Well I hope you haven't been washed away in the storms at the weekend! At least there is a little sunshine now.

As the day's get shorter and even here we get a little less sunshine, many people feel tired and are lacking in energy. So this month we've brought you some tips on how to feel more energetic.

Have a tip for us? Let us know on our Facebook page or our blog.

As usual, more can be found either on our main website , on our Facebook page and our blog as well. Please do drop by and leave us a comment.

Sincerely,

Estelle Mitchell

Winter Blues

In the UK 1 in 50 people are diagnosed with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) but many of us experience a milder version of the "winter blues" even here in Spain.

Exposure to sunshine triggers your brain to produce serotonin, a substance many people know of from it's use in anti-depressants. Less sunlight means less serotonin which makes us feel down. Less sunlight also means more melotonin which makes us feel sleepy.

So what can you do?

Get outside

Get at least 20 minutes of day light every day, it doesn't have to be full sunshine but natural light.

Lose the designer sunglasses

Your eyes are part of the trigger process for registering sunlight so if you wear dark glasses you lose much of the trigger. Try to sit outside without sunglasses for a little while each day.

Get enough Vitamin D!

Australian research found that taking Vitamin D supplements for as little as 5 days can boost mood for those people affected by SAD.

We do have a very high quality Vitamin D product available at the clinic and will have more information on this next month.

A bit flat and tired?

Taken on too much?

Studies have shown that listening to tracks with 150 beats per minute boosts stamina and gives you energy. My favourite? "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen!

Keep drinking!

Feeling tired and headachy are classic symptoms of dehydration so take a big glass of water, squash or a cup of tea. Check your urine, if it is darker then straw colour you are dehydrated!

Afternoon Slump

My personal favourite remedy for this is Quick Spark or NADH to help boost energy levels.

None to hand? Try chewing gum. Contrary to the sulky teenager image chewing peppermint gum has been shown to boost alertness and concentration. Although it is the peppermint scent that is important.

Check your iron levels

Having "sub-optimal" iron levels can affect energy levels.

And always combine iron whether in supplement or food with Vitamin C for maximum absorption.

Check your thyroid

Changing hormone levels can affect thyroid function. There is a detailed article on our blog.
