Greetings!

Welcome to Autumn! I can hardly believe the summer is over.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As everyone knows we are passionate about making safe and painless breast screening available to women here on the coast. There will be more of the latest news and articles on this topic on our Blog  and Facebook page over the course of the month.

As usual, more can be found either on our main website or on our Facebook page and now our blog as well. Please do drop by and leave us a comment.

5 Superfoods that could help fight breast cancer

Kidney beans - high fibre foods like kidney beans can help reduce your risk of breast cancer (and bowel cancer too!). An American study found that women who ate at least 26g of fibre a day were 13% less likely to develop breast cancer.

Broccoli - rich in Sulforaphane, a compound that targets cancer stem cells stopping them developing into tumours.

Olive oil - an easy one here in Spain! A new study from Spain (surprise surprise) has shown that the fats in olive oil can decrease the activity of cancerous cells.

Soya - a controversial food as people had been concerned about the phyto-estrogens. However new research suggests that including soya in your diet may actually reduce your breast cancer risk by up to 29% and can reduce the risk of recurrence by a third.

Flaxseed and sunflower seeds - again the spanish diet is a winner! Rich in lignan, sunflower and flaxseeds are shown to reduce risk the risk of developing the disease by 14%.

Should I be worried about painful breasts?

When women book a breast screening it is often because they are concerned about something. Something in their breasts has changed.

Here are some questions to ask yourself if your breasts have become painful:

Do they hurt on a regular or monthly basis?

This could be Pre-menstrual swelling caused by Fibrocystic breasts

Have you just started, stopped or changed your contraception or HRT?

Breast tissue is affected by hormones, changing your hormone levels can cause discomfort

Does your bra fit?

Badly fitting bras can put pressure on sensitive tissue. If you have lost or gained weight get fitted! www.figleaves.com have a great DIY tutorial

Have you found a lump?

Don't panic! Most breast lumps are cysts that are caused by hormone fluctuations or something similar. Many women would describe their breasts as feeling "lumpy" periodically.

Remember that the vast majority of breast lumps are benign.

If you are concerned about any changes in your breast the breast screening at the clinic only takes about 20 minutes and we can normally see you the same day. Reports take 24 - 48 hours.

Get to know your breasts! Get into the habit of checking your breasts once a month so you notice any changes quickly.
