Food Allergy App
a tip from Michel
 Michel Roodenburg

Anyone with a food allergy knows how much time they spend reading labels in the supermarket.

Now for the techno wizards there is an app for your iPhone!

You put in the details of your allergy and then use the phone to scan the barcode of the product. The app warns you if the food contains any problem ingredients.

Isitinit Food Angel - Sainsburys products and some brands

FoodWiz - Tesco, Asda and some brands.

Both cost £10 for a year's subscription and are available from iTunes.

Bring on the versions for Mercadona, Morrisons and Hipercor!

Wear your trainers right

Running 2Hitting the gym to prepare for summer? Read this before dusting down your trainers.

Trainers have a shelf life

This is about 500 miles (800 km). So if you are averaging 10 miles a week this means approx every 12 months.

Store them correctly

Store trainers in a warm dry place to help the materials recover between uses.

Check the laces

Laces increase the support so make sure that the laces in the bottom 4 holes are evenly tightened every time. If they feel a little loose in the ankle check if you are using the extra double holes at the top.

Get the right shoes

Go to a proper sports shop and get advice. If you overpronate you need different support to a rigid foot, speak to the assistant and get the right support for you. And ALWAYS wear your orthotics for your sport.

Make sure that whatever trainers you buy have a good strong heel cushion.

Pain Barrier

If you get any discomfort in your shins, knees or hips while running always get it checked. Although this can be a sign that you need new trainers!

Keep the style

If you find the right shoes take note and replace with the same style when they wear out!

Carole Duménil Acupuncture Curbs Severity of Menopausal Hot Flushes, Study Suggests

Carole Duménil Lic. Ac., OMBAcC, Soc. SAC

A study published this month in Acupuncture in Medicine suggests that Traditional Chinese acupuncture, which treats patients by inserting and manipulating needles in the body, curbs the severity of hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms largely related to mood.  The women in the study received acupuncture twice a week for 10 weeks and showed significant drops in the severity of their hot flashes.

Many women are willing to try anything to get rid of dreaded hot flushes and moodswings associated with menopause and acupuncture, which has been used for women's health as early as 3rd century AD can offer an alternative to hormone replacement therapy.  Whereas Western medicine focuses mostly on hormone replacement therapy, to replace the hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) no longer being produced by the ovaries, Chinese medicine offers a more holistic approach. It considers that in a state of health and balance a woman should go through menopause with no sign and symptom and any adverse symptom is a sign of imbalance that can be rectified through treatments like acupuncture.

In addition, acupuncture allows for individualised treatment, as all women do not suffer the same menopausal symptoms and therefore do not need the same treatment.

These days many women are concerned about the risk factors associated with HRT(hormone replacement therapy) such as increased risk of breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and blood clots and Chinese medicine, with its long history of treating women's hormonal conditions, offers a natural and safe alternative for relief of symptoms such as sleep disturbance, weight gain and hot flushes. Acupuncture can help encourage the body to adapt to the changes it is going through at the time of menopause so this phase of life needn´t be synonymous of illness but rather of renewal and "second spring" as the Chinese so poetically describe it.
