Greetings!

"Time has no divisions to mark its passage, there is never a thunder-storm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year. Even when a new century begins it is only we mortals who ring bells and fire off pistols." ~Thomas Mann
(Tour De Lights, 2010. Brooks Running Event Tent)
Being both mortal and runners we are always excited for the fire of the pistol so we can begin keeping track of time. Lets have 2011 be a year of new race and fitness goals, and personal growth and achievement; make th
e extra effort, go the extra mile in all of your endeavors.
Fleet Feet closed out 2010 with an excellent December; Coach Derrek Gunn got married and we wish him and his wife the best for their future together, everyone had a blast at the FFRC Holiday Party, and we would like to say thank you to every one who attended the Tour De Lights 5k and made it the most successful one to date. Brooks Running Guru, Shawn, brought the truck, event tent, and tons of prizes to give away, we had between 250 - 300 runners in attendance, and collected 350 pounds of food for the Bonney Lake Food Bank.
Rolling into January we have several key events coming up. Dr. Dennis Eldridge and Pete Erickson of Performance PT will hold twice-a-month question and answer sessions, 1st and 3rd Mondays at the Fleet Feet store. Please stop by and have all of your training, recovery, and general health questions answered by professionals who live and breath sports. Also, we will be hosting defense training in the store with Cathy Gradston (see details below), and New Year New Goals Marathon and 1/2 Marathon Training!
Thank you all for a great year of walking, running, and achieving with Fleet Feet Bonney Lake, and we are looking forward to 2011 being even better!
Run Fit. Run Fast. Run Far. Happy New Year,
Paul Morrison

Welcome Back, TriGuy! - The Weakest Link
Happy New Year; with each new year comes new goals. What is a triathlete to do but work on their slow sport? You know...The part of the triathlon that hurts your finish time. For me it has always been the run so I have once again chose to work on the run.
In this year's column I would like to highlight each month's mission and goal that will ultimately lead me to this year's focused race being Ironman Canada in late summer. A two peak season is planned by specifically training for a spring marathon (my weakest link) than after a short break continuing on to my ultimate triathlon toward the end of the summer. The added fitness naturally gained by training for my weakest link will nicely cross over once full on triathlon training begins. So, for all those who are unmotivated this time of year because the next triathlon is months away, mark your calendar and sign up for a spring race in whatever your weakest link is and get out there!

Nutritional Notes:
In Praise of Parsnips
The first chill of winter is the perfect time for picking parsnips. That's because this root veggie needs the frost to convert starch to sugar and fully develop its unique sweet and nutty taste. Don't be fooled by the parsnip's tough outer skin; its woody texture quickly softens when cooked.
Health Benefits. Parsnips are an excellent source of vitamin C, fiber, folic acid, copper and manganese. They are also high in niacin, thiamine, magnesium and potassium. Parsnips are a good source of riboflavin and vitamins B6 and E.
Selection Tips. Choose parsnips that are medium sized and have a firm, unblemished, beige skin. While this is the peak growing season, parsnips are available yearlong in most areas of the country.
Storage. As with all root vegetables, parsnips can last quite a while. Wrap unwashed parsnips in a paper towel and place them inside a plastic zip-lock bag. Store them in the crisper in your fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Use. Before using, wash the exterior and peel the skin of the parsnip. Cut off the top and bottom and either slice or julienne, according to the recipe instructions. Parsnips can be steamed, sautéed, or roasted. Add to the soups and stews during the last 30 minutes of cooking for extra taste and texture.
Maple-Glazed Roasted Vegetable Medley
1 ½ cups sliced carrots
1 ½ cups sliced, peeled parsnips
1 ½ cups sliced, pealed turnip
4 tsp. olive oil
½ tsp. kosher salt
¼ tsp. ground pepper
cooking spray
2 Tble. maple syrup
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine first six ingredients in a 13x9 inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Stir in maple syrup, and bake an additional 20 minutes until tender and golden, stirring once after the first 10 minutes. Makes four - ½ cup servings.
