PrezA Message from our President, Jim Carty CSP

Jim CartyWith the turning of a leaf...

Just like the weather, many of us have business models which experience seasonal cycles.  The amount of emotional upheaval which the onset of fall seems to have created can be used to confirm this. Colleagues and clients alike are sharing comments illustrating both ends of the spectrum:

"As short as this year's summer was, I hate that it's almost over."

"Things are really picking up now that the summer is over."
Recently, I again had the honour of participating in the annual CAPS Leadership Summit. Spending a couple of days with the national leaders reminded me that even though we all experience cycles in our businesses, we do have the opportunity to leverage the cycles and have them work for us.

Across the country, at the local level, preparations are being made for successful chapter leadership transitions into the 2010 year.  Nationally, guidance and direction is being sought in order to develop the new strategic plan which will carry our whole association forward for the next three to five years.

Over the coming months and years, in our businesses, each of us will experience cycles, some of planting and others of harvest. Sometimes they will be caused by industry events or client schedules; sometimes by our own lifestyle choices.  During these times, you can take comfort in the fact that there are individuals giving of their time and experience at both the local and national levels to lead our association into the future.

I encourage, and even challenge you to consider what your part could look like in the association's future leadership. You may find it a season of great harvest.

Jim Carty
President 2009

PaoChairMessage from the PAO Chair

We are delighted with the success of our 2nd Annual PAO Charity Golf Tournament held on August 12, 2009 at The Meadows Golf and Country Club. The co-operation of four Ottawa Professional Associations helped make this event successful. This year Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario  was the recipient of the money raised at this event.

For those who took part in the event, the many sponsors and gift donors who donated prizes for our golfers and the people who contributed to the live and silent auction, all helped to make the 2nd Annual PAO extremely successful. By far, a great time was had by all. With your generous support, we raised $5,509.29 to help make a child's wish come true!

On behalf of CAPS, IAAP, ICF and SPO, thank you for helping us make a difference!  Plans are already underway to make the event even better!  We hope that we can count on your support for next year's event.

Yours truly,

comingComing this fall!

Contribute to the CAPS Foundation and take home a great book at the same time! Janet Stewart-Lussier has collected dozens of relevant business books, donated by CAPS Ottawa Members. At the fall meetings, you'll be able to purchase raffle tickets and potentially take home one (or more) of these for a fraction of the cover value. All of the proceeds raised from these raffles will be donated to the CAPS Foundation on behalf of the Ottawa Chapter.

Promotional Fallout - Part 1 of 3

You've heard things like ''you have to spend money to make money'' before. This can be in advertising dollars, training courses, events, you name it. The question though is: how do you know what works? If you advertise somewhere, or you go to an event, how do you know what your return is? Events are easy enough, get cards and do follow ups. You can get a pretty good feel for those that way. But when you put out an ad, or build a website or do direct mail, are you measuring it? Do you know how to get the statistics of who's on your website? What pages they visit or how long they are there? When you do direct mail, is there a call to action that you can measure? Maybe you should look at a campaign specific web URL to send them to, maybe a discount code, or a membership number?

The simple fact is, if you aren't measuring your media, you have no idea what's working and what's just fallout. There are many methods for tracking what's happening with your promotional activities. If you want to learn more, consult Google or you could always give us a call. If you're going to spend the money to grow your company, you should spend it smartly.

In Promotional Fallout Part 2 , we will take a specific look at measuring direct mail. Stay tuned!
