PrezA Message from our President, Jim Carty CSP

2009 Part II

Jim Carty
It is amazing to think that we are in the second half of 2009. I was told by a past chapter President that the year would go quicker than expected. (Talk about an understatement.)

The CAPS Ottawa board, and in particular our Programming Chair Ruth Sirman, are working diligently to finalize the details for our remaining 2009 events. Some of the highlights include our Speaker Symposium in October featuring Hall of Fame inductee Peter Legge, as well as the return this fall of our Silent Auction, in support of the CAPS Foundation.

Right around the corner, in August, is the Professional Associations of Ottawa charity golf tournament.  In cooperation with three other local associations, CAPS Ottawa will be supporting Make-A-Wish Eastern Ontario in fulfilling another child's wish this year.

During the first half of the year, many members told me about the changes they made in order to adapt.  Things like the economy and how many organizations are working to be 'green' have forced our business models and/or methods to be adjusted.

As our Chapter continues to look for ways to provide value to our members, adjustments and adaptations to our methods must also be developed.  We will continue to revise ouir plans as we refine our vision.  Any insights or ideas that you have to improve CAPS would be of interest to me.

Thanks for your help with this.

Regards,

Jim Carty
President 2009

Dealing with the Downs
They say that marketing and advertising in a down economy is slow, but others say that it's the best time to get ahead of your competition (In fact, I've said that). But what do you do when there's no budget, no time and a down attitude to boot? Sales may be slow, and the phone doesn't ring, what do you do?

How many free marketing techniques can you think of off the top of your head? And what market are you looking for? Some of the great things I've seen recently are Youtube videos that have a global reach. They can be funny or serious but when done well they get around. Talk to your local medias and see if they are looking for some filler in their editorial section. Summer is a great time for community events. Get involved in something and talk to people. Everyone has been taking advantage of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and a range of other social medias. Have you taken a chance to learn about them? Even if you're feeling a pinch, learning about what's out there, and making connections that may not be sales today, can result in a connections that turn into business for a long time to come.
