PrezA Message from our President, Jim Carty CSP

At the top of your game

Jim Carty
The hockey season is over (finally over according to some).  As in previous years, the winners will be making their way to the celebrations while the rest are 'going golfing'.

In this hockey-mad country, there are amateur players at all levels of the game finding themselves lining up to participate in summer hockey camps. Their goal? To improve. To gain an edge over the competition. Not all players choose to follow the summer camp path.  Some players and coaches believe that 'cross training', participating in 'whatever sport is in season', will develop a better, well rounded amateur athlete.

What about you and your business?  Since the summer time is typically a quieter time for many CAPS members, you may have an opportunity to consider your own game plan as well.

Sure, taking some time off to simply relax should be near the top of your list. Then what?  Will you be participating in a dedicated summer camp or a complimentary activity?

Some of the things you could be exploring include:

  • New product development - maybe it is time to work on that book, DVD or teaching tool.
  • Professional development - did you register for that improv class?  Or a speakers' boot camp?  Or the NSA convention?
  • Network development - with whom have you wanted to create or improve your relationship?
Amateur players will be working on ways to prepare for next season.  They will be working to ensure that their participation and contribution to the team is at its peak.  You should have the same intention for your clients and colleagues.

Regardless of how you choose to spend your summer, either focused business building activities or the occasional networking event to augment your chapter activities, the fall is coming.  With it comes a new season, new opportunities and increased activity.  Hockey players at all levels know what their plans and goals are for the new season.  Do you? If not, you have the summer to prepare for it.

Jim Carty
President 2009

Speaking with Props: A Blessing and a Curse
July 11, 2009

Location: Arthur Child Heritage Museum, 125 Water Street, Gananoque, Ontario
Time: 10am to noon
Price: Admission to the museum and exhibit is by donation. However, attendees must register in advance before July 3.

SAVE ME A SPOT

On occasion speakers use one or two props on stage to emphasize their message with varying degrees of success.  CAPS member and artist Cheryl-Ann Webster uses 120 props to share her message, in fact, she often shares the stage with 120 women to promote self-acceptance. Come to the Arthur Child Heritage Museum on July 11 and join Cheryl-Ann, with her 120 women, and hear how using props can be both a blessing and a curse in your speaking career.

Bring the whole family as there is plenty to entertain everyone at the museum and in the heart of the 1000 Islands.

Cheryl-Ann Webster's Beautiful Women Project is a touring art exhibit composed of 120 clay sculptures of real women, aged nineteen to ninety-one and is on display at the Arthur Child Heritage Museum in Gananoque, from May 1- October 31.

The mission of the Project is to raise awareness about the link between self-worth, self-identity and physical appearance. The artwork is accompanied by motivational and educational presentations, workshops and resource materials suitable for a broad range of participants. This exhibit explores the adorning and altering of the body in the name of fashion, a concept present in many cultures and time periods of the world. However, a new and deeply concerning widespread dissatisfaction with our physical form exists today. A decrease in self-esteem can often result from internalizing commercial messages that say we need to alter ourselves physically. These messages leave men, women, boys and girls with the desire to conform to an unattainable, and socially-created image of beauty. A display of historic corsets at the Arthur Child Heritage Museum is juxtaposed with the exhibition of Cheryl-Ann Webster's Beautiful Women Project.

While you are in Gananoque why not take this time to relax and on a cruise around the Islands or watch a play at the famous waterfront Playhouse.

As an individual, Tax Planning is important but usually not much is available to minimize taxes. As a business owner you have many ethical loop holes available to you. This month's subject deals with a Health Spending Account (HSA) and the need for a Financial Plan.

Health Spending Accounts have existed for many years, they are recently becoming more popular. An HSA, is not an insurance program, but a tax tool, which allows a business owner to deduct health & dental expenses from their company's revenues. As you know, most of the times, it cost less money to pay for something paid by a company than from their individual income; therefore, it makes this option attractive.

*Key points to consider, items not normally covered by traditional plans qualify and NO medical evidence is required.*

As a member of CAPS the set up fee is discounted by 50%. As well take advantage of a complimentary "Financial Plan".

We will assist you:

  • In determining where you are today.
  • Setting realistic financial goal (short & long term).
  • Create your "Plan"  - Your plan will evolve with time. The main thing is to start with something.
  • If desired, follow up with you to make sure that you stay on track.
  • Many tax planning strategies are considered to maximize your personal & corporate income.
  • Work with your current accountant/financial planner to make certain these plans are in line with what has already been set-up.

Please call us to set up an appointment 1-613-843-7377 or email us at info@beneficium.ca. Click here to view a PDF on this subject.

When you are going to an event, what sort of communication tools do you bring with you? The usual business card? A pamphlet, flyer? Or just word of mouth? All of these and many more are good options but what can you do that is different? A lot of the time, people who you meet at an event simply forget you amongst the others they meet. How do you stand out? Perhaps you should try a business card printed on a different kind of paper? Maybe cut into an interesting shape? Is your pamphlet the usual piece of paper, folded twice, just so it can be the same size and shape as everyone else's?  What if you tried a square? Or a long piece printed on a card? Remember, If your promotional piece stands out, so do you.
