PrezA Message from our President, Jim Carty CSP

Jim Carty

Anyone who has spent much time recently around CAPS and its members ought to have heard its mission "to be the association of choice for experts who speak professionally".

CAPS members display an amazing diversity in expertise or topic areas, while at the same time you will find some industries in which many members seem to focus. Yet even then, the methods or specialties are often different.

Another area of great variety in our membership is our primary presentation methods. Some focus on keynote presentations, others train or facilitate.

In the end, for all of the differences and variations in our business models, there is one key underlying aspect that I believe each of us has in common. I believe that each of us is aware of the continued need to hone our skills in creating and delivering our messages to the marketplace.

This is why our chapter's February, March and April events are so exciting.  During our February session Dr. Robert Rohm of Personality Insights, shared practical ways that we as presenters can better connect with others through understanding human behaviour.

In March, one of our own, Wendy Cherwinski will guide us through the development of better speeches and presentations. Dave Paradi will come to visit in April for a special session on the improved use of PowerPoint, podcasting and webinars.

True, our membership is diverse in expertise and in delivery. Yet it is when we come together to improve those areas that we do share in common that I believe CAPS truly shines.

I hope you choose to join us at an upcoming session. You are the reason that we have them.

Jim Carty

Five Steps to a Terrific Speech with Wendy Cherwinski
Saturday, March 14, 2009

People have been giving speeches for thousands of years - with good reason. Few other media can match the power of a well-crafted speech to shape opinion, change attitudes or call people to action. Yet it's rare today to find specific training in how to plan and write speeches. As a result, speakers can overspend time, effort and resources on projects that do not always deliver the anticipated results.

Finally, there's a solution to this problem. Five Steps to a Terrific Speech is a fast-paced multimedia seminar designed to give participants the knowledge, insights, skills and tools they need to plan and write a terrific speech.

Let professional speechwriter Wendy Cherwinski take you through the anatomy of a speech. (Note: This is a BYOSSSS* session) In front of your very eyes, she'll dissect a speech and show you what makes it work - and the mistakes that can cause it to get sick - or even die. By revealing her five-step speechwriting process, she'll also share tips, tools and techniques you can put to use immediately to give your existing speeches new life.

Five Steps to a Terrific Speech is the result of Wendy's many years of experience writing speeches for executives in government, business and the non-profit sector. She also keeps up to date on changing practices and trends by attending events such as the annual Ragan Speechwriters Conference in Washington DC.

Afternoon Session - Transform your overloaded text slides into persuasive presentations

In 2009, are your results going to decline if you use the same tired approach for creating presentations? Will you need to improve your presentations in order to persuade and inform in a tough economic climate? If you answered Yes to these questions, book the afternoon of April 8th in your calendar for a workshop that will give you practical tools to improve your presentations and your results in 2009.

Dave Paradi, author of "The Visual Slide Revolution", selected as one of the Top 10 Business Books of 2008 by The Globe and Mail, is coming to Ottawa to show you:

  • The academic research that proves why visuals work better than text so you'll be able to move forward confident of your new approach
  • Why you need to be reading the supermarket tabloids and how they can improve your slides (this is the single quickest improvement you can make)
  • How you can think of the perfect visual without spending years at design school - this is so simple anyone can do it
  • Over 20 visuals that you can create - you'll leave with ideas you can implement immediately
  • The one simple trick to making those confusing charts and graphs crystal clear when you present them
  • The way to use animation so that it will never annoy the audience

As a bonus, Dave will be doing slide makeovers of your actual slides. After you register, you'll be given the opportunity to submit some of your slides and have the chance to see them transformed during the workshop. It's like getting free design and consulting services for free! Dave will also be offering his book and other practical resources at steep discounts at the workshop, so come prepared to leave with all the reference material you'll want to take the ideas even further.

Evening Session - Blogging, Podcasting and YouTube channels - letting the world see your expertise

What is the best way for a prospective client to be convinced that you are the right speaker for their meeting? To see you speak. It demonstrates your expertise and your style. But what if they can't come to one of your presentations? Then what do you do? Leverage the power of Internet tools such as blogging, podcasting and YouTube.

Dave Paradi uses all of these tools to attract prospects that turn into paying engagements. In this session, he'll take you behind the curtain and show you:

  • How to set up a YouTube channel that serves as a 24 hour a day marketing engine
  • How to create a podcast that is listed in the iTunes store
  • How to use a blog to serve a steady stream of valuable content to your target market
  • How to repurpose content for all these streams so you create once and distribute in many different ways
Check out Dave's podcast on iTunes, his YouTube channel and his blog.

Branding is the unique combination of visual and conceptual ideas to provide a solid image to a potential client. A good exercise is to take your company materials and lay them out in front of you and to have your website in view as well. Do the pieces present a single image? Look for consistency in logos, colour, style, paper (if used) and content. A solid brand takes time to build but once together can give you more confidence in presenting your company and can help you compete with companies many times larger. Please feel free to contact Anthony to discuss your branding needs.
