The California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC) recently published proceedings from a meeting on promotion of use of human milk in the NICU. As might be expected, PQCNC and CPQCC are dealing with common issues in their human milk projects. Skin to skin care (STSC) was identified as a critical element for the promotion of exclusive human milk use in NICUs. The main challenge identified by CPQCC in implementation of STSC was defining a clinically stable eligible population of patients. Key institutional factors were education and motivation of staff. Familial factors involved facilitation and sustained motivation of mothers. In response to these barriers, opportunities for promoting STSC were enacted or suggested by the group, including defining clinical stability for eligibility, facilitating documentation, strategies to increase parent and staff education and motivation, and encouraging maternal visitation and comfort. Please have your teams review the CPQCC experience. No doubt it will offer PQCNC teams some unique insights and help us to identify further opportunities to increase exclusive human milk use.
