Phase II Data Collection
During the December webinar, teams on the call agreed to finalize the data collection form for Phase II. For the new data form, click here.
Since the webinar it has been suggested that an effective way to satisfy the need for a reduced data collection burden with the equally important need to collect collecting accurate representational data would be for teams to collect data on all NSTV patients (a form on every chart) but only enter a randomized and appropriately representational percentage of those data collection forms into the PQCNC database. This strategy would ensure that every patient had an equal chance to be entered, would avoid distortion due to the 'hawthorne effect' but would still minimize as much as possible the data entry burden on staff.

BioScience Trends 2011 article |
According to Dr. Yoshiko Niino's BioScience Trends article, the cesarean rate has increased in all facilities, with the increase in the private sector by 86% compared to the 31% increase in the public sector. One suggested reason for the cesarean discrepancy was the incentive for private physicians working in private hospitals with the fee-for-service model while physicians in public hospitals work for fixed fees.
Other suggestions to decrease the cesarean rate is to utilize midwives more often, making delivering babies less 'medical' while providing fewer interventions, delaying admission until labor is established, and providing labor support. To view the article, click here. |
Hospitals Move To Curb Elective Early Deliveries |
More hospitals in Massachusetts and across the country are saying no to elective deliveries of babies before 39 weeks unless medically necessary. Doctors cite increased health risks associated with early deliveries, not costs - though Texas' Medicaid program has stopped paying for such births.
