Notes from Marty...

McCaffreyOur final Learning Sessions for Phase 1 of Exclusive Human Milk in Nurseries and NICUs is fast approaching.  The first half of the Learning Session day will be an opportunity to review and celebrate the impact of Phase 1 activities on increasing the use of human milk in our own facilities and across the state of North Carolina.  The second half of the Learning Session day will focus on planning for Phase 2 of these initiatives.  In this capacity all attendees at the Learning Sessions will serve as members of the Expert Teams planning Phase 2 efforts.  Please take the time to check your busy calendars and try to find a way to join us for both the final Learning Session for Phase 1 and the initial Expert Meeting for Phase 2 of Exclusive Human Milk. Pre-registration below.

Notes from Laurie...

Laurie Dunn MD  A follow-up to the interesting discussion during the NCCC monthly webinar last week.  We changed a number of things related to feeds of the VLBW infant all at once 3 years ago.  Our biggest goals were early feeds of human milk, and sole feeds of human milk up to a month of age.  We did several other changes and one of those was to try and standardize our apporach to aspirates/residuals.  Attached was what we felt was reasonable after reviewing the literature, and after intense committee discussion.  My impression is that the nurses have been given the authority to make decisions for 1-2 aspirates, and we are having feeds held for long periods less often.
