Data!

Last week the illustrious Mr. Cochran forwarded out data reports for your facilities. Please take the time to review this information. We look forward to your feedback on the reports and opportunities you recognize for us to move forward to achieving our collaborative aims. We especially need your thoughts regarding the focus of EHM over the next three months. We have had, and will continue to have, a focus on skin to skin care, but the data suggests there are other elements of the action plan to focus on.
Across the collaboratives we are making improvements in several indicators. In EHM NCCC we have seen a big jump in infants being discharged on fortified human milk solely, with a corresponding reduction in exclusive formula feeding at discharge. We have also seen increases in RN knowledge of electric pump use by moms. In EHM Nursery there have been marked increases in skin to skin time in L&D, documentation of breastfeeding support every shift, and moms demonstrating hand expression. There are centers that are making great strides in the primary outcome indicators of exclusive human milk during the maternity stay (EHM Mother-Baby) and VLBW infants receiving solely human milk over first 28 days of life (EHM NCCC). Collaborative wide both these indicators are fairly flat. We clearly have more opportunities to excel in our future.
Data submission has diminished somewhat since May. Please advise us if there are issues which we can effect to support your documentation of the great work you are doing, which we may not be capturing. This may be a result of challenges with the data form or it could be that the data as we are analyzing it may not represent the hard work you all are doing. A great example of the latter arose on our EHM NCCC call Monday. We are reporting skin to skin events over the first week of life as 0-3, 4-6, or >6. We are reporting shifts an RN knew of mom's use of an electric pump as 0-7, 8-10 or >10. Our results for these indicators collaborative wide are flat, but it occurred to a couple of us on the call that if VLBW infants are skin to skin once, or twice in the first week of life, that might be a major achievement! The same holds for the mom reporting to RNs 5 times that she has used a pump. Zero and 2, or zero and 5 are not the same thing. Bottom line, we need to reconsider some of our data analysis. Our suspicion is we are having even more impact on the exclusive use of human milk than we realize!
If you haven't yet answered Keith's question below, please do as soon as possible. Keep up the great work everyone. Enjoy what is left of summer!

Seriously! We want you to respond:
What can we do with the time remaining in this phase of the initiative to help achieve your Human Milk Initiative goals?
We have 3 webinars, 1 learning session, and possibly other activities left. What do you want/need? What should be our focus areas? (skin to skin, etc.)
Click reply and let us know what you're thinking!
