Integration of Kangaroo Care Into Routine Caregiving in the NICU: What Is Stopping You?

kangaroo care

The question we all should be asking ourselves this week regarding the integration of kangaroo care in our NICUs is this, "What is stopping us?"

This review is a nice follow on to yesterday's "Close To Me" presentation. Hopefully the summer will be time for all of us to consider the education needs (of staff and families), the opportunities to integrate of Close To Me, the protocols necessary and equipment which may be needed to make kangaroo care the norm in all our NICUs!

New Question Added for the Human Milk Initiatives

information As we have traveled the state seeking support for PQCNC operations, a recurring question from potential funders like DMA (Medicaid), NC blue Cross Blue shield and Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services has been, "Do you know how many of our patients have been cared for in your collaborative projects?" The answer is, "No."  We have been informed that in applying for future funds it would be extremely helpful for those attempting to fund PQCNC work if they knew these numbers.  When this issue was discussed at the PQCNC Leadership Meeting this month, Dr. Richard Hudspeth summed up the views of most by saying, "Its a fair question, its important to payers interested in supporting this work and we should know the answer to the question."

As a result, we are adding a question related to payer status when enrolling patients in our quality initiatives.  The comments from Leadership Team members at several centers was that this information is available.  It may be more or less available depending on centers but it is obtainable. It is our hope that collecting this piece of information will not be onerous. It is also hoped that all will understand how important this information is.
