Moving Forward...

It was invigorating to see so many gathered for our EHM Learning Sessions over the last several weeks. The determination of committed teams tackling the challenges that exist to increase the use of human milk in our nurseries and mother-baby units is a force to be reckoned with.
As we discussed, we as a collaborative need to streamline efforts even further to assist you in the work you are doing. Based on your input, we will be reviewing the current data set. It is clear that "slimming down" of data collection is required for the well nursery. Please let us know, well nursery teams, what you think! What is mission critical in the data set and what might be eliminated in order to focus teams more on improvements and less on data. We also ecourage comments from NCCCs regarding whether data reduction is necessary. Our goal is to release a refined data set to well nursery teams by June 20.
Our commitment is to one hour webinars for the remainder of the initiative. Please let us know if there are topics you would like covered or other hospitals/programs you would like to hear from. Please also let us know if it would advance your work to have some of the core team here (Marty and Keith) visit your facility.

Resource: Outcomes of Human Milk-Fed Premature Infants
Click here for a recent review by Dr. Schanler on the outcomes of human milk fed premature infants. While it is most directly applicable to preterm infants it offers a thorough review of the theory for human milk effect on a variety of conditions which are of import to term babies as well (nutrition, growth, immune defense and neurodevelopmental outcomes). Some may have reviewed this article already, but based on conversations at the NCCC Learning Session it might be helpful to revisit it. It can be a challenge to initially and consistently maintain staff engagement in intensive clinical projects. Discussing this article may help in garnering (or re-garnering) staff support for promotion of human milk use. In the NICU we have a tendency to focus on acute, measureable outcomes, like NEC. Dr. Schanler covers the range of outcomes improved by use of human milk in VLBW infants with a detailed review of the enhancements human milk has been shown to have on developmental outcomes.

Several groups asked where to get the golden bow pins - provided by Miriam Labbok, PhD
The Golden Bow pins - just the golden bow - may be purchased from the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action: It comes with a bookmark explaining the golden bow concept; or Lapel Pins R Us - This is the group that originally designed the golden bow for UNICEF, and also designed the golden bow on a field of Carolina Blue that is the logo for Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute. If many of you are interested in ordering we could group the orders for a possibly discounted price - let us know!
