Upcoming important dates, next steps for the SIVB Initiative...

(The Support for Birth initiative's weekly email newsletter comes out every Tuesday.  As a reminder, it is your job as key contact to share relevant information with other team members at your hospital.)

March Webinar

conference call Thank you to the many teams who participated in this morning's webinar.  We had another excellent discussion, this time focusing on SIVB hospitals' approach to scheduling induction of labor, and had guests (Donna Lane and Angela Gantt) from WakeMed Raleigh share their experiences around scheduling of induction.  We also heard from Frieda Norris of CMC-Pineville about a workshop she offers to teach nurses evidence-based labor support based on Lamaze International's six healthy birth practices.  Click here for access to slides from today's session.  Please send me any feedback, questions or concerns regarding today's webinar.

Data

data entry February reports went out Monday morning.  Please contact Jessica (jphipps@email.unc.edu) if you have any questions about your report or about the data your team submitted.  Believe it or not, the end of March is rapidly approaching, so make sure your team is collecting and entering this month's data.  Jessica did a thorough review of each team's data last month and contacted teams about needed edits to the data.  We will be asking teams to bring that level of attention to their own data this month, while we spot-check for any missing data elements.

If you are sampling, be sure your sample includes 40 NTSV cases admitted for intended vaginal birth, as well as the number of c-section cases it took to reach 40 intended vaginal birth admissions.  Contact Kate or Jessica with questions about your sample.

Upcoming events

calendar There are three more scheduled all-team activities for this initiative: webinars in April and May and the final learning session, which will be held in Raleigh on June 7, 2011.  If there are specific themes or topics you would like us to include in those sessions, or specific speakers you would recommend, please let us know as soon as possible so we can try to meet those needs.  The next webinar is April 26, from 7:30-9:00am.

"Buy-in"

alignment During this morning's webinar, some teams discussed challenges they are experiencing with engaging physicians in this initiative and helping their physicians to work on the vaginal birth rate as part of a quality improvement framework, as well as challenges with empowering nurses to take responsibility for the outcomes of this work.  We also heard about the importance of physicians, patients and nurses being "invested" in vaginal birth.  As Marty McCaffrey, the PQCNC Director, pointed out, it may be effective to work with your hospital's executive leadership to ensure there is understanding that the hospital is engaged in meeting your goals for this initiative at all levels.  It may also help to bring in an "expert" to provide the evidence base and the broad vision for why this work matters.  Dr. Chescheir is available as a resource; we also heard about hospitals asking local MFM/OB leaders to speak to their teams.  If your hospital is struggling around engaging the key stakeholders (physicians, nurses, hospital administration, patients), the PQCNC SIVB team is here for you.  Let us know what you're working on and how we can support your work.
