Webinars March 14 and April 11 2011

conference call Please mark your calendars and have as many of your team participate as possible in our next two meetings by webinar next Monday on March 14 and again on April 11 from 2-4 pm. Activities to increase the number of moms who are pumping adequate volumes at 28 days have focused to date on communicating the message, kangaroo care and pumping issues and certainly many teams will continue to work in these areas. In our next two webinars we will be focused on feeding guidelines and hope teams will examine practices and look for improvement opportunities related to feeding the VLBW infant. Click here to join the webinar. The phone conference number is 712-432-6100, access code 96875#.

Linda Smith responds to a team question:

information "What is the difference between colostrum for mouth care and buccal application of colostrum?"

"Oral care using colostrum" and "Buccal application of colostrum" are really talking about the same practice, just with different words.

·    In our NICU (at Mission), we used the term "buccal application of colostrum" in our policy and for staff education.  We are placing 0.2ml of colostrum in an 1ml oral syringe followed by  0.1ml instilled in  each buccal (cheek) area of the mouth every 3 to 4 hours for babies who are either NPO and/or not receiving any oral feedings (total NG fed).

·    For families, we did an educational handout and called it "Oral care using Colostrum' with the reason.  We also included information about interested parents could be taught this skill by the nurse and could be involved with this care under the direction of the nurse after training.
