From the Data Dictionary...

dictionaryToday I want to highlight the pacifier question and refer you to the data dictionary information:

"Did you or another professional provide a pacifier on this shift?

a.    Yes- I (or another provider) provided a pacifier on this shift.  Family members providing pacifiers are not relevant to this question.

b.    No- The child does not have a pacifier during this shift or has a pacifier that was not provided by you or another hospital staff member on this shift."

Certainly we might see opportunities to provide information to the mom trying to establish breastfeeding about a pacifier the family has provided, but the data form is meant to reflect the attitude and behavior we can control-our own. The data dictionary can be found on the PQCNC extranet or click here.

More on Skin to Skin from Emily Taylor, MPH, LCCE, CD

news This week, we are highlighting Skin-to-Skin in anticipation of our next Web-Based Learning Session  We hear that many of you are feeling confident with the evidence that early and continued Skin-to-Skin facilitates breastfeeding.  And, we know that many of you still have questions about how to change practice so that Skin-to-Skin becomes the norm.  This will be the focus of next week's session.
In the meantime, we'd like you to consider learning more about the Warm Chain - an evidence-based package of practices designed to support optimal thermoregulation of the newborn, including:

  1. Warm delivery room

  2. Immediate drying

  3. Skin-to-skin contact

  4. Breastfeeding

  5. Bathing and weighing postponed

  6. Appropriate clothing and bedding

  7. Mother and baby together

  8. Warm transportation

  9. Warm resuscitation

10. Training/awareness raising

One important thing to note is that your team is likely already practicing MANY of these steps - You're well on your way!  When teaching about the Warm Chain, you can increase breastfeeding and skin-to-skin while shifting your message from "breastfeeding-a practice that some will not prioritize" to "thermoregulation - a high priority for every nurse and doctor."

Learn more (and get a giggle) by watching the World Health Organization's Video on The Warm Chain

Next Learning Session, Wednesday, February 23 2011
