Energizing week of Learning Sessions

learning session Many thanks to all the travel team members that attended a learning session last week! We had an active, hard working and participatory group and each team made progress designing "tests" of potentially better practices. If the word "test" is off-putting, think of these as small experiments to see how we can improve our support of the breastfeeding mother. Multiple tests will provide the information you need to discover improved practices. Data collection continues for the period of time we work together; however, it is this work to improve practices that means the most to mothers and babies. An often overlooked source of information are mother's themselves. Don't be shy about sharing your intention to improve support and solicit feedback and information from them.

Data Collection Tool

data entry
Please immediately download and use the NEW (and final) version of data collection tool available here, or on the extranet.  There are a few small changes as well as additional questions about moms intention to breastfeed. The biggest change in using the data collection tool is this: Begin the shift data collection on the shift the baby was born. This will assure that the data will be reliable about exclusivity.

Donor Milk for the Term Newborn from Emily Taylor, MPH

cbi logoWe have gotten a few questions about donor milk for the term infant, specifically about any research related to this practice. Emily offers this comment and a link for further reading: "If we stop thinking about the 'benefits of breastfeeding' (i.e. the benefits of the way your body will normally function) and start thinking about 'the risks of formula / not breastfeeding' the question is no longer a question in my mind.  Human milk is for human babies.  It is species specific.  Even one bottle of formula (cow's milk with complex additives) has a deleterious impact on the health of all babies (yes, especially sick babies)."  Read more here
