Evidence-based Action Plan from Laurie Dunn, MD
In our initiative, we will be working together to build reliability into our care practices using the best evidence in the literature. The data collection tool is reflective of several important components of successful breastfeeding support, documented in multiple examples of reported research. These include communication (effective, early, continuous), a multidisciplinary approach with staff that is knowledgeable and supportive, the central role of skin-to-skin care, proactively addressing the potential for growth failure, and the recognition that the impact of mother's milk on both short and long term outcomes is clearly related to a dose effect in the first month of life. This article by Dr. Paula Meier provides an excellent overview of these issues and demonstrates one source of the scientific evidence for much of our action plan.

Data Entry Webinars Scheduled |
In each of your Newborn Critical Care Centers you have been identifying patients <1500 grams who are admitted in the first few days of life and collecting information about how we interact with new moms, encourage skin to skin time, and how these VLBW infants are fed, etc. This information will be entered into a data base for your use as you begin to trial potentially better practices for obtaining mom's milk and feeding VLBW infants. I have encourages you to plan for data entry by identifying a small data group who will enter the data. One hour training will be provided several time the week of December 13th and again, several times the week of January 3rd. Please plan for one or more of your data entry team members to participate at least once in each month. The training dates and times are listed in this attachment.

Learning Sessions
During the months of our initiative in 2011 I hope as many members of your team as possible can gather for the monthly learning sessions which will be held "virtually" by phone and computer. If you have not yet participated in a PQCNC webinar please contact me within the next two weeks to make sure you can access the Webinar program we will be using. The Webinars will be held on the second Tuesday each month starting in February. Face to face learning sessions are few, but will be very important to get the work successfully launched and give your team the knowledge needed to provide leadership in your unit. As many as six team members may attend the first learning session on January 13th in Winston Salem, from 9:00 am -3:30 pm. Today is the registration deadline, please use click here and register your team this week. Thanks to the teams that have already registered!
