Thank you for your valuable input

Thanks to all who called in for our first data meeting last Wednesday. Our experience is that staff may grumble about data collection at first, when it is viewed as "just another stupid requirement." However it is a powerful tool to understand the story of why you are getting the results you get. One of my mentors, Paul Batalden says "Every system is designed to get the results that it gets." These measures were designed with the staff in mind, and can be easily answered at the end of a shift after caring for a baby or mother baby dyad. The good news is, in almost every instance, the staff adapt easily to the data collection tool AND are excited to see improvements over time. The second scheduled call to discuss data collection is on October 28 from 3-4 pm. The meet me number is 919-962-2730.

Measures in the service of your improvement goals |
|
The outcome measure for this work is the number of VLBW babies whose mothers are producing adequate volume for them @ 14 and @ 28 days. Process measures are the way to discover the reasons for differences over time in your setting, or, differences between settings. This is an important concept to embrace as we go forward-knowledge of the outcome measure alone is useful only for judgment. Without understanding the root causes of differences in outcomes we can only guess about improvement strategies. We will be learning and using quality improvement science to achieve breakthrough results in the initiative for exclusive human milk for North Carolina babies. |

I will often pass along information about conferences that I believe will be helpful for your team. Click here to register for the NQF webinar "ABC's of Measurement." This would be a great opportunity for members of your team or staff to learn more about measures and bring the learning back to your group. The webinar is free. |
