Upcoming important dates, next steps for the SIVB Initiative...

(The Support for Birth initiative's weekly email newsletter comes out every Tuesday.  As a reminder, it is your job as key contact to share relevant information with other team members at your hospital.)

New plan for Baseline Data Entry

update In order to expedite the data entry for October and November data, PQCNC will enter the data for all teams currently registered for the Support for Birth initiative.  This means that you should complete and send us your October data by November 10.  While the data entry program is still under construction, we will review all submitted data and follow up with individual teams about specific questions.  All teams will begin using the online data entry program for real-time data collection on February 1, 2011.

Please mail us copies of your data collection forms; each team should retain a copy of all completed data collection forms.  We will destroy the paper copies you send us once they are entered.

Send your data to:

How is baseline data collection going so far at your site?

question marks Please use the following link to answer a BRIEF (5 questions) survey to let us know how data entry is going at your hospital.

I've heard from some hospitals that things are going well, while others are having trouble identifying the right patients for data collection, and some are just getting started.  I hope to hear from each team by the end of this week so we can work through any challenges with baseline data collection as early as possible.

Your team will use the baseline data results at the January learning session to identify areas to target for change once the active phase of this project gets underway in February 2011, so it is important to have accurate (and completed!) data in so you will have good information to work with.  You should be collecting data on every nulliparous patient at term with a singleton, vertex baby, at least until you've reached the first 40.  If you are a large hospital, now is the time to decide if you will be doing a monthly sample (which must include a minimum of 40 charts but can be more) or submitting data on all NTSV cases.  Hospitals large enough to sample should already have 40 cases (of the complete form) by last Friday.
Pre-registration is now available for the January learning session.

calendar Each team needs to attend one of the two learning sessions, January 11 in Winston Salem or January 25 in Raleigh.  All three key team members (physician champion, nurse champion, senior hospital administrator) are expected to attend; each hospital is encouraged to bring up to six key team members, including quality/performance improvement department personnel, patient advocates, staff nurses and others.  CME Category I credit (good for MDs, NPs, CNMs, and RNs), lunch and materials will be provided at no cost.

The pre-registration page has been designed so that you can inform us who ALL of your team members are, and then indicate which will attend the learning session.  Several hospitals have registered with incomplete teams.  Now is the team to put your team together so you will be ready in January.  Make sure your team members know which learning session you are attending so they can clear their calendars.  If you would like PQCNC to work with your hospital, unit or OB department to help identify key stakeholders for this initiative, contact Kate.
