Summer is now in full swing, and as August approaches Edinburgh is definately the place to be to experience all that is fresh and exciting in arts and culture.

In the coming weeks ASF Arts & Culture Representative; Emma Robertson-Werner will give you an insiders view of how to navigate the Festival and maximise your visit, having worked 10 Festivals at the Traverse Theatre (Scotland's New Writing Theatre), before joining us at the ASF.

If travelling to Scotland isn't in your plans, you will be able to see some great productions this month in NYC: 59E59 Theaters is presenting a series of 16 productions before their departure to Edinburgh. More details below.

This Fall will see ASF once again undertaking many events - a Save the Date Calendar is below together with news of ASF Young Professionals 'Monthly Mixers'.

HAMILTON GARDENS AT ST. NICHOLAS PARK

Last year Alexander Hamilton's home, The Grange, reopened to the public after being moved and restored by the National Parks service. The Grange sits within St Nicholas Park and the ASF is working with The New York City Parks Department and others on the developing of the Hamilton Garden adjoining The Grange.

Crab Apple trees were planted last fall with the help of The Daughters of the American Revolution (New York Chapter) and now the planting of heather beds is about to begin.

The Grange sits on the part of the original property the home was built on. Hamilton named his home after the Grange in Stevenson, Scotland, the Hamilton's family seat since the 16th century. To become involved contact the ASF office at 212 605 0338 x 4.
CELEBRATING THEATER: THE NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND BRINGS MACBETH TO NYC

National Theatre of Scotland's Macbeth, starring Alan Cumming as all of Shakespeare's characters, opened to critical acclaim from Glasgow audiences, before it crossed the Atlantic for its debut in New York City.

The hotly-anticipated and highly ambitious show, which already sold-out all 17 performances in Glasgow, will be performed as part of the Lincoln Center Festival from 5th to 14th July 2012.

In the show, Hollywood actor and award-winning Scot, Cumming, plays all characters in a bold re-imagining of Shakespeare's chilling tale of desire, ambition, and the supernatural. The production is set in a psychiatric unit and centres on a patient who is reliving the story of Macbeth. CCTV cameras watch the patient's every move and the white clinical walls of the unit come to life in a visually stunning multi-media theatrical experience, featuring a central virtuoso performance.

THE EDINBURGH FESTIVALS

Edinburgh, the month of August:

Hotels bursting at the seams, restaurants buzzing, bars and clubs offering extended hours and buses overflowing, it can only mean one thing  - the Edinburgh Festivals!

Edinburgh hosts varied cultural festivals, from Film to Jazz , all year round, earning it the title 'Festival City'.

However, it is during the summer months when the population doubles, you can see a street performance on every corner and queues around each block for the 'hot ticket' shows

When most people refer to the 'Edinburgh Festival' they mean the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (3- 27th August 2012) which, features thousands of performers in hundreds of venues, presenting shows for every taste including theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, musicals, operas, music, exhibitions and events.

However, the summer months also play host other major festivals. Notably the Edinburgh Art Festival, International Festival, Royal Edinburgh Military TattooInternational Book Festival and the Edinburgh Mela Festival.  You can visit  www.edinburghfestivals.co.uk for full details on all of Edinburgh's year-round Festivals.

If you are planning on visiting Edinburgh for the Summer Festivals it is recommended that you book everything as far in advance as possible. Prices are higher than other seasons.

Many publications are available in venues throughout Edinburgh during the Festivals; featuring reviews and breaking down the days into 10 minute sections - there really is never enough time to see it all! Visitors are spoiled for choice, causing many to opt for attending 6 shows a day, or more!

Visit www.visitscotland.com for information on travelling to and around Scotland.

DISNEY*PIXAR'S HEROINE  - MERIDA - NOW HAS HER FAMILY TARTAN REGISTERED!

The DunBroch Tartan (Merida's Family Tartan) has officially been registered with The Scottish Register of Tartans

Representative of the tartan worn by the Royal Family in 'Brave', the pattern is neither splashy nor bright, but organically refined in its colour sense. There was a concerted effort to use hues that were indicative of the less saturated dyeing techniques during the ancient period in which the fantasy film is set. The DunBroch Tartan is the original work of Pixar Animation Studios and is protected by applicable copyright and trademark laws. Only to be woven with the written consent of Disney/Pixar.

Much like Scotland itself, the DunBroch Tartan is set against the ocean blue of the North Sea. The deep scarlet represents the family's reverence for its own history, and the blood shed during battles between the clans. Deep green shows a love for Scotland's majestic highlands, where the story of Disney Pixar's 'Brave' unfolds. Navy blue, and its clear central intersections, represents the forging of the clans within the DunBroch kingdom. And finally, the subtle grey imbues a sense of respect for the inner soul of the strong Scottish people.
