Dear Friend,

We hope you will enjoy this edition's round-up of Scottish news and events.

ASF has had two great events in the past few weeks...

On June 3rd we had a wonderful time at our Jubilee Celebration at Jones Wood Foundry (NYC's answer to the Big Lunch Celebration), where many people had their photo taken with HM the Queen (or at least her likeness in the form of a life-size cut-out!).

On June 8th, the 15th Annual ASF John Muir Golf Tournament brought out the competitive spirit in our golfers, who enjoyed a challenging day on the Van Cortlandt Golf Course and some haggis eating at the BBQ in reward!

Please see the bottom of this email for our Events Gallery

Please visit the ASF's website often for news & updates and please 'like' us on Facebook  so we can keep you informed.

Kind Regards,

Camilla Hellman MBE, Development Director

The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle - whose motto is Nemo Me Impune Lacessit (No one provokes me with impunity) - represents the highest honor the Queen can bestow in Scotland.

William, 29, who is known as The Earl of Strathearn north of the border, will be formally welcomed into the order in a ceremony at in Edinburgh on the 5th July.

To mark this occasion there will be a service at St. Giles Cathedral, with a parade down the Royal Mile to the Scottish Parliament, followed by a reception at Holyrood Palace (pictured above).

Other Royal Knights of the Thistle include HM the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and Princess Anne.

The Order honors Scottish men and women who have held public office or who have contributed in a particular way to national life.

The patron saint of the Order of the Thistle is St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, who also appears on the Order's badge.

SCOTTISH SHORT FILM'S NEW YORK PREMIER

Johnny Barrington's TUMULT, a Scottish short film is having its New York premiere at this year's BAMcinemaFest

Barrington's film had its world premiere at Sundance this year and it combines Viking fierceness with Monty Python-like farce in thirteen hilariously bloody minutes.

This story of battle-weary Norse warriors who come into contact with an entirely new kind of army not only reimagines Scotland's history, but was filmed against the stunning backdrop of the Highlands.

* Click HERE to watch TUMULT (13mins)  Password: tumult
* Click HERE for information on attending the complete BAM shorts program on June 30th. Ten short films will be screened for 1 ticket price. General Admission: $13, BAM Cinema Club Members: $8, Movie Moguls: Free, Seniors: $10

NEW DISTILLERY TO OPEN ON THE ISLE OF HARRIS

The stunning Isle of Harris
The ASF would like to welcome its newest member, the Isle of Harris Distillery Company.  As the name suggests, IHD has been established to build the first ever malt whisky distillery on the Isle of Harris, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. At the heart of the project is a desire to help re-generate the most fragile of the Western Isles' economies. In the last 50 years, this island, at the epicenter of Gaelic language and culture, has seen its population dwindle from 5,000 to 2,000 inhabitants.

The proposed distillery will include warehousing, bottling and importantly a visitor centre with associated retail and catering facilities, thereby generating direct employment for some 20 individuals. It is hoped that the distillery will act also as an impetus for other initiatives, boosting tourism and other local industries, thereby creating a much larger indirect employment opportunity.

Harris provides an excellent location for making a superb single malt whisky, with pure water, plenty of local peat and the climate providing ideal maturation conditions. The worldwide reputation of Harris Tweed as an artisanal product of the highest quality, provides a natural association for the Company's malt whisky and IHD are actively working with the tweed industry to develop joint initiatives.

Should you wish for further information about the project, we encourage you to contact the project team directly: [email protected].
