We are the
CerealCEREAL Church!
For a long time, Grace
Church has been delivering canned goods and other food donations down to the St. Luke's/St. Paul's Food Pantry in Bridgeport. They urgently need donations of all kinds of groceries, but one of the items that they seem to run out of and need a lot of is cereal.

If all of us could remember to pick up a box of cereal (or two or more!)  each time we shop, we'll be able to make a wonderful and much needed contribution for the food pantry each week.  There is a collection basket at the main entrance of the church, and also one in lower Lewis Hall.

Dear friend,
Shipwreck

"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?"

-Job 38:4

You may be familiar with the story of Job - a fine, upstanding and faithful man who becomes decimated by illness, loss and financial ruin. Having lost his land, his family and his health, Job ends up sitting on an ash heap, scraping his itchy sores with a piece of broken pottery. In the midst of his suffering, different friends come to him and speculate about what he must have done wrong to get into this mess and what he needs to do to get back to prosperity. Job refuses to listen to them.  He knows that it is God who is in charge - and he patiently waits for God to deliver him. But when the suffering just goes on and on and on, even faithful Job reaches his limit. He finally cries out to God, "What gives? This is just not fair! When are you going to do the right thing, God? What have I ever done to deserve this?" God answers back, "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Who is the one who made the earth, the sky, the heavens, the universe? Are you forgetting who's in charge?"

Like it or not, although we like to think of ourselves as powerful, when push comes to shove, it is God who holds all the cards.   And life is not always smooth sailing. All it takes is one terrible storm at sea to remind you of how small and powerless you really are. What storms have you weathered in your life? How have you made sense of the fact that bad things do happen to good people? Have you ever felt forsaken by God, as Job did? Have you, like Job, also had the experience of being delivered from your distress?

Here at Grace Church we are dancing with life's big questions. Whether you're here just for this Sunday or if you're searching for a community of faith to belong to, we invite you to come to explore, come to connect and come to believe among us here at Grace Church. We'd enjoy both your company and your participation as we follow in the way of Jesus and learn and grow in discipleship together.
Peace,

Annual Church Picnic
Thank you all who made our annual church picnic a success! Follow this link to see pictures of the event as we celebrated our choir on their last Sunday of the season, and also bid farewell to our seminarian, Kelly, as she headed off to her first ordained position in Portland, Maine.

Meeting of the Table Ministers

Our table ministers (acolytes) will meet following coffee hour next Sunday, June 24th to review our summer procedures and to welcome and train new servers. If you are interested in joining the ranks of our fine table ministers, you are most welcome to join in - just speak to Elsa. People age 12 and older are eligible to take part in this ministry.

Summer Blessing for Students

THIS Sunday, June 24th, students from preschool through high school will be given a special blessing as the summer vacation begins during our service. Bring your friends - all are welcome to receive a summer blessing! Students are encouraged to wear fun summer wear that day - shorts, Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses, flip flops, etc! They are also invited to bring a special object that represents summer vacation for them.

Summer Church Location Swap

Grace Church and Christ Church are swapping locations this summer whenever their own priest is on vacation. We will be worshiping in Tashua on July 1, 8, 15th and August 26th. Service times at Christ Church are 8:00 and 9:30 AM.  For those who may be interested in going together, let's meet at Grace Church at around 9:00.  For directions to Christ Church, see this LINK.  Let's show great hospitality this summer both in welcoming others in to our usual location and venturing out to visit others in theirs!

Elsa away on vacation

Elsa will be away on vacation from Friday, June 29th through July 16th. In case of pastoral emergency, please contact the Rev. Louise Kalemkerian at 203-536-9259.

Coffeehouse Beatnik

Our new monthly coffeehouse for teens begins on July 28th and will happen from 7-9pm on the fourth Saturday of the month thereafter. The coffeehouse will be a chaperoned, sober event sponsored by Grace Church and offered to the teens of Trumbull and surrounding communities for the purpose of providing a welcoming and accepting space for teens to be themselves, to enjoy music and the arts, and to grow in community.

Church members can support this event in two ways:

1. Volunteering as a chaperone or

2. Baking treats or donating individually wrapped snacks or drinks to sell at the coffeehouse each month.

If you'd like to volunteer or if you have questions, talk to Dave M, Avery or Jon.

Piano Lessons
Would you like to study the piano? Do you know someone else who would? Our minister of music, Dave McWilliams, is hoping to gather some students to study with him on Sunday afternoons right here at the church. Dave is experienced in teaching piano students of all ages. Speak with, or email, him if you're interested in knowing more.
