Varsity Basketball

On Tuesday, PVI picked up a great win over a talented Carroll team 58 - 57.  The game featured many lead changes in the second half but PVI got a huge block from Freshman Kendall Hunter with 4 seconds left to prevent any chances for Carroll.  On Friday, PVI hosted the nations # 9 ranked team and undefeated in the WCAC Good Counsel Falcons.  PVI started strong to take a eight point lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Lady Panthers and the Falcons went back and forth in the second and third quarter.  Unfortunately, Good Counsel went on a strong run in the fourth and pulled away from PVI to leave Fairfax with a win.  On this Tuesday, PVI traveled the long journey to St Mary's Ryken.  The game featured an outstanding battle between two teams but SMR came away with a win in OT.  PVI stands at 18 - 8 overall and 11 - 6 in the WCAC.  The Lady Panthers still hold on to the top spot in the VA state rankings.

JV BASKETBALL

The JV team went 2-1 over the last week easily defeating Carroll, then suffered a tough loss to Good Counsel on Friday, then bounced back with a big win over St Mary's Ryken.

In the game against Carroll the team welcomed back Megan Golinowski to the court.  She played only limited minutes, but chipped in 4 points and added 3 rebounds.  Also playing well in that game were Natalie Durrwachter (9 pts) and Therese Neubig (8 pts).   On Friday, PVI jumped out to a big lead in the first half, but struggled to put points on the board in the 3rd quarter.  It came down to the very end, but Good Counsel was able to make enough plays to win the game.   Lauren Alger (13 pts, 5 rbs), KK Wiggins (11 pts, 5 rbs, 4 asts, 6 stls), and Megan Plombon (11 pts, 5 asts) all had solid games for PVI.   Last night the team made the long trip to St Mary's Ryken (never an easy place to play).   While a little sluggish, the girls pulled away for a 17 point victory.    Kayla  Meador had a huge game with 17 pts, 5 asts, and 8 stls.   Natalie Durrwachter added 13 points.   Briana Florez had her best game of the season giving the team a spark.

The JV team plays their last regular season game on Friday against St Johns.  With a win, PVI will enter next week's tournament as the #1 seed.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

FRESHMEN GIRLS COMPLETE AMAZING SEASON - The freshmen girls basketball team wrapped up an exceptional season Monday night with a hard-fought 42-33 away win against Seton (Manassas) JV team. This victory was the 16th win of the season for the girls with only four losses, two each to conference rivals O'Connell and Good Counsel. The second loss to Good Counsel was a heart breaking 1 pointer that in the words of Coach Tony Conques "was ours to win at the end, but we missed so many opportunities throughout the game that last second heroics shouldn't have been needed". This team's record is the second best of Coach Conques' 11 year career as the freshmen coach. "This was a truly great group of kids - talent and attitude - no complaints at all. They worked hard every day and the results are there!"

The team was led by strong guard play from Kelly Taplin, Emma Brehany, Catey Susco, Marissa Probst, and Isabelle Murakami and inside strength from Nikki Toole, Jordan Kijewski, Teresa Neves, Ali Muskett, Bae Lee Harman, and Capri Cunniff. The strength of the team was in its' depth. "It is great when you get contributions from everyone on the team each game". Assisting Coach Conques with this year's team was Leanne Conques (her 5th season) and Julie Jones. "Having Leanne to work with makes this that much more special and she is terrific with the kids on all three teams."

In summary - 3 wins over Ireton; 2 wins each over Flint Hill, Georgetown Visitation, Stone Ridge, Forest Park, and John Paul the Great JV; and single wins over Westfield, Woodbridge, and Seton (Manassas). Now that is good work!!
