Varsity Basketball

The Lady Panthers remain on course for one of their best seasons in years. December wins over ranked and undefeated Potomac (Woodbridge)and cross-town rival Flint Hill in the Westfield Bulldog Bash Holiday Tournament capped a December that left the team with a 10-2 record leading into the always-tough WCAC January/February schedule. Included in those first ten wins were victories over conference foes Seton, Ireton, and McNamara, a second win over Flint Hill (for a 3rd place finish in the Westfield tournament), and the Arthur Turner Memorial Tournament Championship for the third consecutive year.  Both losses came in tournament play to the Miller School (Charlottesville, VA), and Madison.

They picked up where they left off in the New Year. They continue to impress with a current record of 16-5 overall and 9-3 in the WCAC. Building off a strong 10-2 December the Panthers have continued into the new-year with exciting wins over conference foes Carroll, Ryken, Ireton, Seton, McNamara, and O'Connell. Only losses to three nationally and 'top-five'(in the Metro Area) ranked WCAC powerhouses Good Counsel, St. John's and Holy Cross have marred their success. Prior to those conference losses, they were ranked as high as #15 in the Metro area.. They are also perched in a more familiar spot - #1 in the Virginia Independent School Division #1 rankings. A position they work to maintain in defense of their pursuit of a 6th consecutive VIS State Championship. PVI has brought home that title 12 of the last 15 years.

This year's Panthers are:  Juniors - Lauren Cox (PG), Marlena Tremba (SG), Annie Kane (G), Marlisa Morales (F), Josey Swanberg (F), Mariel Simko, and Kasey Curtis Sophomores - Ariana Freeman (G/F),(C), Lindsay Oblitey, and Freshmen - Kendall Hunter. Only the loss of Kasey to a hand injury has slowed the Panthers whose trademarks on the court are teamwork, suffocating defense, strong shooting, and SPEED. Coach Scott Allen is enjoying the teams current success, stating to his ladies after last night's big win over McNamara that it was one of the best oeverall team perfomances based on the amazing level of spirit, teamwork, and total individual commitment to team success. Truly, no one is going to look past these girls during the last month of the season.

JV BASKETBALL

The JV team has had a great season so far with an 11-3 record (8-2 in the WCAC).   After a couple losses last week, the team seems to have things turned around and look forward to the remainder of their schedule and a possible WCAC championship!

The team is led by several freshmen including leading scorer Megan Plombon (14 pts/game), Kayla Meador (11 pts/game, 5 asts/game), and Lauren Alger (10 pts/game).   Natalie Durrwachter, Caley Gormley, and Theresa Neubig provide the team with aggressive defense. Briana Florez comes off the bench to provide the team with some scoring. KK Wiggins, Raney Swanberg, and Kelly McLean are our post players and take care of most of the rebounding for the team.   Megan Golinowski (captain) has missed almost the entire season due to injury which has really hurt the team as she is the only returner. Megan Toth has been out for most of the season with a broken foot, but we look forward to getting her back for the stretch run.

A couple highlights this season have been a great home win vs Seton right before the holiday break, and a big win against our rival O'Connell a couple weeks ago. We look forward to several more highlights this season!

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

Freshmen Girl's Basketball - the New Year has not brought the prosperity the girls had hoped for so far. Coming off a strong 7-0 December the girls have struggled with a 3 point OT win over Forest Park, and a pair of disappointing losses to conference rivals Good Counsel and O'Connell. What has been consistent thus far, however, has been the hard work and determination the coaching staff is looking for from this very talented team. This week brings games with Pope John Paul the Great JV, Flint Hill, and first-time opponent C.D. Hylton of Manassas.  A strong week would get the girls back on track for a strong showing in the second half of the season. Sitting at 12-2 at this point is a great accomplishment and can only get better from here.
