AMC Quotes

Life is mostly froth and bubble,

Two things stand like stone,

Kindness in another's trouble,

Courage in your own.

Dear Friends,

Ann Martin Center ensures that children and families have access to the academic support and emotional guidance they need to lead healthy, happy lives.

Here's an example of how you can make a difference.

"Ann Martin Center has provided my son Matthew the ability and opportunity to work with a professional educational therapist.  She has been a very supportive point person to use as a source of reference and advice when working with my child.  I have learned a great deal in the special needs field and she's always an inspiration to work with. She has provided my son stability in coming to the Center for the last three years. We are very fortunate to have experienced a place where we feel secure and comfortable spending quality time in getting the assistance we need for our family!"

Over 70% of our clients and families in need of social and emotional support cannot afford the full cost of ongoing counseling. With free and reduced sliding scale fees offered through our school-based and clinic psychotherapy programs children, like Matthew, can find healing with the help of Ann Martin Center staff.

Your generosity makes a difference in the lives of underserved children and families in our communities.  Join Ann Martin Center as we celebrate 50 years of "nurturing the minds and hearts of children."

We are pleased to share we met our Annual Campaign goal for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012.  With your help, we're able to provide psychotherapy and educational support to the most vulnerable children in our community.

As always, thank you for your incredible support.

Sincerely,

David S. Theis, DMH
Executive Director

AMC Celebrates Success of First 5 Project

On-site therapists provide early intervention and outreach services to Pre-K students and families

Ann Martin Center recently completed its first
successful year of early intervention and outreach programs at Brookfield Village and Sobrante Park Elementary School in East Oakland.  With a well-staffed, on-site team of mental health clinicians, Ann Martin Center provided psychosocial, emotional and psycho-diagnostic assessments, consultation and psychotherapy services to all eligible students and families from kindergarten to 4th grade.

Impact on Students and Teachers

The impact of our classroom interventions across almost all of the six kindergarten classrooms at two school sites was very positive.  The clinicians and teachers unanimously reported growth and improvement in the social and emotional well-being of their students.  Kindergarten teachers, as well as those from 1st to 4th grade, reported feeling better equipped to handle the demands of their students and demonstrated greater empathy for their situations, according to an independent evaluation.  The overwhelming majority of students (92%) were rated as having improved socially within the classroom due to one-on-one work with Ann Martin Center clinicians.  A large majority of students (79%) were rated as having improved academics as a result of the early childhood mental health services provided. Ten of eleven teachers (91%) reported positive changes, with the largest percentage reporting the overall classroom behavior and climate changed "a lot."  We were also able to connect with outside agencies and partner with them, in collaboration with Brookfield school staff, to co-sponsor a Literacy Night to promote reading and learning at home.

A special thanks to Project LAUNCH & First 5 Alamedy County, Health Services Agency for major support of this program. For more information on our early intevention or school-based services, please contact Lily Ly, PsyD, Clinical Program Assistant Director at (510) 655-7880 ext. 393, e-mail [email protected]; or Laurie Lober, LCSW, Clinical Program Director at (510) 655-7880 ext. 351, e-mail [email protected].

Open Registration for Educational Therapy Program

Ann Martin Center now accepting students for the new

2012-2013 school year!

Registration has begun for our Educational Therapy Program for Fall 2012. The intake consists of an in depth look at report cards, standardized tests, other assessments, Individual Educational Plans completed by the student's school district or school, written assignments and examples of school work and homework. We discuss the student's academic strengths and challenges, interests, social skills, and personality and emotional needs. After reviewing the history and concerns of the parent and student, the student is matched up with one of our educational therapists. Careful attention is paid so that the match will be successful and the educational therapist and student will work well together. Educational therapy sessions take place after school at our Center. An individual program is created for each student that addresses his or her specific needs as a learner and diagnostic and prescriptive teaching techniques are utilized on an ongoing basis. Academic progress and building independence as a learner are the goals for each student. To schedule an intake appointment, please contact our Learning Program Director, Betty Peterson at (510) 655-7880 ext. 370 or e-mail [email protected].

The Learning Program is also offering small groups that focus on homework, organization and study skills at our Piedmont Center for the Arts location. Currently we are forming groups for upper elementary, middle school and high school students. This site is centrally located in Piedmont, within walking distance from several schools. Homework groups were first offered last year and have been very successful, continuing through the summer. Groups are limited to 3 - 4 students each, so please contact Betty if you are interested.

Our Educational Assessment Program offers a wide range of comprehensive educational assessments. We specialize in diagnosing learning disabilities and provide strategies and recommendations for success. In addition, our assessment program has partnered with CommunicationWorks, offering speech and language and occupational therapy assessments when recommended.  Please contact Shawn Usha, our educational assessment coordinator at (510) 655-7880 ext. 322 or e-mail [email protected].

We are grateful to our foundation and corporate partners who recently awarded grants to Ann Martin Center in support of our Learning Program ("Minds and Hearts" Project). The goals of the program are to address the reciprocal influence between learning problems, emotional health, and the motivation to learn. Funds will be used to support educational therapists and other program costs.  We are pleased that the following community partners have recognized the impact of our work in Alameda County:

Game Day at AMC:  Reggie Jackson

Reggie Jackson Joins AMC Leaders for Oakland A's vs Yankees Game Fundraising Event

Baseball Hall of Fame legend Reggie Jackson, also known as Mr. October, hosted an Ann Martin Center fundraiser at the Memorial Day A's vs. Yankees game in the Owner's Box at the Coliseum raising over $15,000 to support Ann Martin Center's programs. The event brought together nearly 35 people to watch the game, take pictures with Reggie, learn about the Center, and also hear from Adam Taylor, the principal of Brookfield Elementary School.

Brookfield is one of 9 Oakland Public Schools affiliated with Ann Martin Center.  The school is located in an impoverished neighborhood in Oakland with high crime rates.  In a daily routine, Taylor walks the playground to gather up bullet shells before students arrive in the morning,

Principal Taylor is proud of reducing chronic absenteeism in his school from 20 percent of the students to just 7 percent.  Improving attendance and decreasing drop-out rates is a key predictor for completing high school.  Taylor attributes a large portion of his student's growing success and positive life changes to the help and support received from Ann Martin Center therapists.  The San Francisco Chronicle featured a front page story on the dramatic progress at Brookfield.

Edward Blum, husband of AMC Board Member Robin Blum, made the connection with Reggie who was first introduced to Ann Martin Center through his work with children in Oakland schools. A special thanks to our Board of Directors, staff and supporters who joined us in making this event possible!

You can include a charitable bequest when you create your will, or you may add or update a bequest at a later time. Also, donating appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds is quick and simple and may provide you with significant tax benefits

SaveSave-the-Date!  50th Anniversary Benefit Gala Event

Join us in celebrating Ann Martin Center's 50th Anniversary in spring 2013!

Ann Martin Center will host its Annual Gala on Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the Oakland Kaiser Rooftop Garden. The fundraising gala, led by Event Co-Chairs Betty Simpson and MaryAnn Pearson, promises to be a terrific evening of dinner, entertainment, silent and live auctions, inspiring client testimonials and a special appeal.  Guests will have a chance to bid on some fantastic silent and live auction items including weekend getaways, themed dinners, and great bottles of wine.

After taking a pause on the Minds & Hearts event in 2011, we changed the timing of the event from the fall to spring. This year Ann Martin Center celebrates 50 years of "nurturing the minds and hearts of children."  Executive Director, David Theis, is excited about strengthening and enlarging the scope of the agency as the premier provider of counseling and learning services for underserved Alameda County children and families. "Growth cannot be accomplished without the support of the community.  As such, Ann Martin Center hopes to raise more than $100,000 in support of the agency's core programs that provide psychotherapy and educational support for children."

Tickets are $150 per person.  Table hosting is available for groups of 8. We offer corporate and individual sponsorship benefits at all levels.

For ticket, sponsorship and event information, please call (510) 655-7880, ext. 399 or email [email protected].  Seats are limited this year so please reserve as early as possible!
