Greetings!
We hope your year is off to a wonderful start. Classroom Champions assigns a different theme, aligned with our mission, each month. Athletes talk about the topic in their video, and teachers create lesson plans to integrate the topic and their athlete's message for their students. Weightlifter Natalie Burgener is a natural on camera. This month, we bring you the perfect storm of how athletes, teachers and students came together to learn and share ideas for how to set goals. Enjoy! Thanks for your support, Leigh Mesler Parise, PhD Founder and Education Director |
Monthly Theme: Goal Setting
Natalie described her own Olympic journey with a goal-setting pyramid. She then put the concept into context for how it applies to students, for example, getting good grades. Inspired by the video, some teachers, like Steve Hodgson (4th grade, Oak Terrance Elemtary) had students make their own goal setting pyramids. Melisa wants to earn an A+ in math, and has laid out steps for herself for how to achieve that goal.
We loved seeing these students from JJ Finley Elementary School create their own video about their goal setting pyramids. Using technology to learn is a core compontent of Classroom Champions.

"You should see the excitement on the faces of the students in my class when I say, "Hey guys! We have a new video from Natalie!" The students are very attentive and hang on every word Natalie is saying because they know that the message she is offering is aimed directly at them."
- Eric Gaydos, 5th Grade, Uniontown, PA

Youth Olympic Games: Winter 2012 Innsbruck The first ever Winter Youth Olympic Games took place in Innsbruck, Austria this month, and Classroom Champions was there! We partnered with the International Committee for Fair Play (CIFP) and leveraged their presence at the games to arrange a live Web chat with Steve Mesler and student athletes. We also asked CIFP volunteers to interview students there about what fair play means to them. These videos are being used in the classrooms to support January's theme, which is Fair Play. |
