Tips for touring the Big Apple

Dear family travelers:

Did you know? Some runners have raced up the 1,575 steps at The Empire State Building, from the lobby to the 86th floor in just 10 minutes! And at the top you might be able to see five states-from the middle of Manhattan!

Did you know? The very first person to be processed on Ellis Island was a 15-year-old girl, Annie Moore, who was traveling with her two brothers on January 2, 1892. Today of course, NYC remains a city of immigrant families. Kids speak at least 140 Languages in New York City Public Schools.    Calendar of Events

The new edition of my Kid's Guide: NYC is full of fun facts for kids and parents. It's also got lots of tips for sightseeing with kids whether you're in the Big Apple or another city you don't know:
  1. GET THE KIDS' TAKE on where they want to go and what they want to do. Let each one plan a day of the itinerary if they're old enough. You'll go places you never would have otherwise and the more they have a say in the itinerary, the happier they'll be ... you too!
  2. DO YOUR HOMEWORK with the kids before you leave home. Start with the city's official website like New York's official tourism website. Local parenting sites can tell you what will be going on for families when you visit.
  3. READ A BOOK or watch a movie set in the city you're visiting. If you're going to New York, try E.B. White's Stuart Little or George Selden's The Cricket in Times Square. Your local children's librarian can help you find good ones.
  4. TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR of the museums you hope to visit on the web and check for special family and children's programs. Some museums, like the American Museum of Natural History, have websites just for kids. You cut your itinerary, so you've got lots of play time. There's no better place to meet local kids than in playgrounds and parks.
  5. ASK the hotel doorman, the front desk clerk, the taxi driver where they take their kids to eat. Try new food at ethnic restaurants. Not only are they inexpensive, but they'll be packed with families just like yours.
MAKE SURE THE KIDS WRITE LOTS OF POSTCARDS to themselves. They'll have a ready-made travel journal of all their adventures when they get home.
