First Thursday College of Dentistry News

Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues:

I'm often asked, "What keeps you motivated every day?" I get that question from many people, but no matter who asks, I always tell them, "I have the most rewarding job in the world. That's what keeps me motivated."

Sometimes the rewards are obvious, but more often than not, they're just things that happen on any given day that show we're doing things right. In the last couple of weeks, two students' communications let me know things are moving in the right direction. One came in the form of a letter, and the other was an email from a D1 student.

The email caught my eye as I scrolled through my inbox and saw that a new dental student had asked to meet with me. He gave no reason for the request, but his email was succinct and polite, and my assistant set up the appointment. Before we met, I asked our academic dean and director of student affairs if they knew of any difficulties this student was having. Neither knew of any concerns or problems.

A few days later, we met. I asked this student about his background and what got him interested in dentistry. All of his answers were thoughtful and well explained. After about ten minutes, I asked him, "Well, what caused you to want to see me?" Without hesitation, he replied, "I just wanted to thank you for accepting me into dental school, and I wanted to let you know how glad I am to be here." He told me more about himself and his plans that include a future career working in public health. After our meeting, I thought to myself, "We picked a good one."

A day or two later, I received a letter from one of our D3s. I could tell at a glance that this student was serious about the content of his letter. I read it slowly to make certain I didn't miss a single thought. The message centered around a recently retired part-time faculty member who had influenced this student's decision to enter dental school, and who also had been especially helpful as a pre-clinic lab instructor. The student told me how much he will miss that instructor's enthusiastic and positive approach to teaching students, and he let me know about "the joy this faculty member had instilled in him during his short time in dental school."

Although different in origin and content, both of these communications showed me that we'd made some good choices in our dental student selection process. These items also reminded me that what we do each and every day matters, perhaps more than we can ever imagine. It's these stories and these moments -- when I know we're doing it right -- that help keep me motivated.
