First Thursday College of Dentistry News
Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues:

What began as a Board of Trustees' concept for a more effective use of University resources to better engage our alumni and community partners has resulted in a new model for organizing Ohio State's colleges and coordinating their external relations activities. Known as the "advancement model," this concept is gradually being adopted across campus, and I wholeheartedly endorse it.

Although there are slight variations in implementing the advancement model, there is a core structure that will soon be common at all OSU colleges. It involves having the offices of alumni, development, and communications linked together as one administrative unit and overseen by one senior staff member. This structure capitalizes on the natural synergies that exist among these important units, and it ensures a coordinated effort for their activities and initiatives. All these improved efficiencies are critical in today's challenging economic environment.

Key to the model is a chief advancement officer (CAO) whose efforts focus on building a cohesive and dynamic team, while also staying closely connected to both the college dean and the head of the University Foundation. This dual reporting structure facilitates the college's strategic alignment with the University's goals, and it reinforces the concept of  "One University."

Last spring, we began the process of adopting the advancement model in our college. First, we studied the plans made by colleges that had already implemented the model --Engineering, Nursing, and Veterinary Medicine. Then, working closely with University Foundation staff, we solicited applicants for a CAO, interviewed several qualified candidates, and were successful in hiring our first choice.

Gareth Gwyn joined our college as a senior administrative staff member and as our CAO early in August. He's got just what we need to make the advancement model work for us. He comes to us with substantial expertise drawn from his career in the private sector. He appreciates the value of strategic thinking, and he has broad corporate experience in business and health care industries.

I'm a great supporter of the advancement model. It makes sense to me, and I know it will benefit our college as we move forward to accomplish our goals. I believe you'll soon see its effectiveness in action.
