Dear Colleagues:
I've been waiting for this week to arrive! Our plans began early last fall, and we've been working continuously since then to get it all done. I knew everything would work out, but we had to be patient, take our time, stay focused, and be positive.
It all started when Dr. Stanley Vermilyea told me he would be retiring after more than 20 years of service to the college, the last ten of which he served as our clinic dean. A few weeks after that, we made a commitment to reinvest in our student support systems. Within days of these significant decisions, we announced searches for an associate dean for clinic administration and patient care, and a director of admissions. We formed committees composed of students, staff, and faculty. In the case of our search for a clinic dean, we included a representative from the practicing dental community and our own medical center. We put ads in all the major dental journals, and we announced these opportunities to every dental school in the U.S. Within weeks, we received applications from all over the country.
The search committees invited their best applicants to campus for an interview, and each candidate made a noontime presentation that was open to everyone in our college. One applicant from each search was identified as the strongest, and with no time wasted, we made competitive offers to these two remarkable candidates. Now, months later, I am so pleased to tell you that we recruited Annette McMurry, JD, the former associate director of admissions at Capital University Law School as our new director of student admissions. Fonda Robinson, DMD, formerly the associate dean of clinic affairs at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, is now our new associate dean of clinic administration and patient care.
Both of these new recruits began their careers in our college on the same day. That's right, on Tuesday, May 1st, Annette McMurry and Fonda Robinson began their first day on the job. And how glad we are to have them here!
For these outstanding hires, I thank our search committee members who worked so hard to identify and recruit these great additions to our college community, and I thank everyone in our college for showing these candidates that ours is a great place to care for patients, educate students, and conduct research. I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Georgia Paletta and Dr. Henry Fischbach, both of whom supported our college as interim appointees during this transition period. Their efforts allowed us to carry on with business so our prospective students and patients continued to receive the attention and care they deserve.
As we continue building our ranks during the months and years ahead, I look forward to many more fulfilling weeks like this one!
