First Thursday College of Dentistry News
Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues:

The week before last, several faculty members, many of our students, and I attended the annual meetings of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) in Florida. These are my favorite meetings of the year because every dental school in North America is represented, and there are presentations on almost any education or research topic one can imagine. Each meeting has rows and rows of exhibitors, some commercial and others informational. You get to hear the latest on whatever interests you, and you can get answers from the experts on almost any question. Another great feature for me is the fact that I get to meet with nearly all the dental school deans from the U.S. and Canada, and we get a chance to discuss the pressing issues facing dental education and research.

I was particularly looking forward to this year's meetings because this was the first time I'd see our faculty and students presenting their work at a national gathering. I planned each day so I could attend as many of their presentations as possible, all of which totaled 54. I also looked forward to the annual tradition of being introduced as one of the new deans at the meeting - another great opportunity to promote Ohio State and the many things we're planning to do. I could hardly wait to get to Florida!

All this was exciting enough, but there were also three great bits of news that came my way during the meetings. The first was an email from Michael Bailey, one of our immunologists, who told me that his NIH grant from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine National Institutes of Health had been funded for five years at a total of $1.9 million dollars. At a time when NIH funding is more competitive than ever, this news was a real boost for Michael, for me, and for our entire college. The timing couldn't have been better!

Two days later, I received the news that the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) Office of Education and Research Training had informed Vivian Ariail, a D2 student, that her application for the Student Summer Research Program had been accepted. This great news was even more special because this was the first time our college had nominated a student for this summer-long program, and only a few students are chosen for this competitive award. Vivian will spend eight weeks at the National Institutes of Health, working with Dr. Jacqueline Mays, a College of Dentistry DDS/PhD program graduate who is now a nationally recognized researcher on the subject of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). What a great opportunity for Vivian, and what a wonderful way to start a new college tradition!

The third exciting news item came to me just minutes before our reception at the AADR meeting. I was told that Michael Border, a D1 student, had won first place in the Dentsply/Caulk Student Research competition. This award that recognizes student research excellence is an honor in itself, but the fact that one of our first-year students won it is just phenomenal!

I was so pleased and proud to attend this year's ADEA and AADR meetings as Ohio State's new dean of the College of Dentistry. It gave me a chance to brag about the accomplishments of our students and faculty to more than a hundred guests who attended our reception.

I left Florida with a sense of pride and satisfaction that carried me through the following week. Of all the great moments I've had since I became dean, this was a high point I'll remember for years to come!
