First Thursday College of Dentistry News
Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues:

I mentioned several weeks ago that when the time was right I would organize get-togethers with students, staff, and faculty so we can review the many college events that have gone on and will be going on in the future. It's important for all of us to be well-informed so we can do our part in helping advance our college. With this goal in mind, next week we'll begin our Dean's Update sessions.

We'll begin these sessions with information about our new students and residents -- how many there are, where they're from, and why they were chosen. There'll also be updates on our staff and faculty, including recruitment efforts and new hires. Other information will include reports on facility enhancements that show the ways we're making the college a better place for our students, staff, and faculty -- and for our patients. We'll also congratulate those who've done something special -- received awards, been recognized by peers, secured grant funding, and other accomplishments. When there's news to be shared about accreditation, fundraising, alumni activities, budgets, and other items, these too will be part of the presentation. We'll also include information about upcoming events at the university and in our college, as well as events that take place at professional venues. We'll always end with some ways to stay informed and become advocates for our college, and as time permits, we'll open up the discussion and take questions.

We'll offer four separate Dean's Update sessions so everyone has a chance to attend. There'll be one for faculty and one for students. Because staff members have variable schedules that may not accommodate noon-hour presentations, there'll be two sessions for them. One will be early in the day, followed by another at mid-day. We'll use the same PowerPoint slides for each presentation, but with narratives tailored for each group. If you can't make it to your group's presentation and you'd like to slip in with another group, feel free to do that. For those who can't attend any of the scheduled times, we'll post the presentation on the college website.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as are able to attend, and I'll do my best to make it worth your while!
