First Thursday College of Dentistry News
Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues:

It's been just two months since we started our "lunch with the dean" program, and I want to share with you how rewarding these experiences have been. Each month, we schedule four staff members and one faculty member who join me for an informal lunch. This has proven to be a great way for me to get to know more about the members of our college community. Getting together in these small groups has given me a more personal way of connecting with the people who help us make this college a great place to work, to teach, and to learn.

What's made these lunches so exciting is the variety of people I've met. They're from all over the college - clinic areas, research labs, and administrative offices. They've received their education at institutions from every corner of the state and across the country. Some of them have worked in the college fewer than six months, and some longer than 25 years. Most live in and around Columbus, but a few travel upwards of forty miles one way to work each day. As a result of this great diversity, the discussions we've had are filled with a wealth of insights about so many different topics.

One of the greatest benefits of these luncheons is that I learn something from everyone I meet. First and foremost, I've learned that everyone -- and I mean everyone -- is proud to be here. They're proud of what they contribute to the college. And they're proud to be a part of what makes Ohio State such a special place.

For many, working in the College of Dentistry was a step up from a previous position on campus. For others, both staff and faculty, it was the second time they'd worked at the college, and they came back because they found no better place to be. But for most, this college is the place where they started, and they're still glad to be here. This says so much about who we are as a community, and what we value in ourselves and each other.

At the end of each lunch, I ask if anyone has questions. I know some people who are reluctant to ask questions in large public settings feel more comfortable speaking up when the group is small. And sure enough, each time we've met there have been some really good questions -- questions that get me to think, and questions that tell me people are genuinely interested in our future and their role in it.

Such moments are great opportunities for me to learn what's on peoples' minds and how they think we can work together to more effectively support one another and do what we do better.

For those staff and faculty who have already joined me for lunch, I thank you for your ideas, your suggestions, your input, and your innovations. For those who will join me at an upcoming "lunch with the dean," I look forward to getting connected. I believe you'll enjoy the hour, and you'll help me in ways you can't imagine.
