Dear Colleagues:
Although I knew there would be broad general interest in our college among senior leaders on campus, I have been and continue to be impressed by the level of sincere and genuine attention I have experienced as the new dean of dentistry. Each day I meet or hear from someone who asks me, "How are things going?" or "Is there anything I can do to help you?" I see the sincerity in the expressions on people's faces when they ask me questions like these, and I know they truly care, and they really want to help.
The broad-based interest in and support for our college goes beyond OSU. I've witnessed it at every meeting, conference, and gathering I've attended in the past couple of months. Whether at an alumni event, a football game, or the annual ODA meeting, people want to know what's happening at the college. They stop me anywhere and everywhere to ask questions that are significantly different from those I get on campus. The most common one is, "What attracted you to OSU?" The next most frequent is, "How big is the freshman class?" Many also want to know, "What's the tuition?" My favorite one though is, "When are we going to get a new school?"
I can't tell you how exciting it is to get these frequent questions that I see as an opportunity -- a chance to educate, to engage, but most importantly, to inspire. People everywhere are rooting for us. They want us to succeed. They are and they will be there to support us because they know -- as I do - that our college's best days are ahead of us.
I encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way to let people know what our college does to improve the lives of people in our local communities and our state. We need everyone to know about and be proud of our college. Our future -- and our future success -- depends on it!
