First Thursday College of Dentistry News
Message from the Dean

Dean Patrick Lloyd

Dear Colleagues:

As I have often said during my first weeks here at Ohio State, one of the reasons I joined this college is to be involved with an institution that is moving toward a new level of national prominence. From previous visits, I learned firsthand about the excellence of this college's students, staff, and faculty, and I heard much about the great support from loyal alumni and friends. In meetings with President Gee and senior leaders, I discovered Ohio State's principle of One University, and its commitment to creating a high performance culture. I also saw a strong desire on the part of senior administrators to help this college succeed as a national leader in education, research, and patient care. All these factors combined made it clear this was the perfect place for me.

I know there are unprecedented accomplishments and achievements ahead for us. To ensure we fully capitalize on all the opportunities that present themselves, it is critical for us to work together as a community. This means everyone - students, staff, faculty, and alumni and friends - joining together to shape our future. Each of us must know how and when it is our turn to participate and contribute to the process of moving our college from excellence to genuine eminence. One important step in moving forward is having a communication strategy that educates, informs, and inspires. This inaugural issue of First Thursday is one piece of this strategy.

This newsletter will arrive on the first Thursday of each month, and each issue will include a brief column from me that details important events and achievements we can all be proud of. To complement what you'll read in this newsletter, I encourage you to visit our website, where you will find news about our college and our accomplishments that make us distinctive and special.

In this First Thursday issue, you will read about our upcoming White Coat Ceremony, our faculty retreat, our September 10th alumni tailgate, the upcoming ODA and ADA receptions, and other news. I encourage you to stay connected and informed about what is new and exciting at the College of Dentistry. To reach our next level of excellence, we need many informed advocates. Working together as a community, we can and will make history at The Ohio State University!

College Welcomes New Students at White Coat Ceremony: September 19

On September 19, the College of Dentistry's new dental students will celebrate the beginning of their path to becoming dental professionals at the annual White Coat Ceremony.

The event serves as an official welcome to the College of Dentistry, and it marks the beginning of the professional educational experience of the members of the Dental Class of 2015. The white coats  students wear at the event symbolize their newfound commitment to dentistry.

The event will be an evening ceremony held at The Fawcett Center Conference Theater. College of Dentistry Dean Patrick M. Lloyd, Dental Alumni Society President Brett Pelok, and OSU President E. Gordon Gee will address the incoming classes.

Street of Dreams Offers Learning Experience for Dental Students

Alumni Reception ODAThe 2011 Street of Dreams event took place August 12 at The Ohio State University. A joint initiative by the Ohio Dental Association (ODA) and the Columbus Dental Society, the event offers third- and fourth-year dental students a venue for meeting practicing dentists and touring their facilities.
This year's Street of Dreams participants visited three dental practices over the course of the afternoon, and they were presented with information from the perspective of practicing dentists.

Following the dental practice tours, an informal reception was held for students, participating dentists, and ODA leaders. At the end of the day, practicing dentists spoke about their careers and the transition from dental school to the "real world" of professional dentistry.

Geriatric Outreach Program Receives William A. Jenkins Award

The College of Dentistry's Geriatric Dentistry Program in Appalachia has received this month's William A. Jenkins Award, the highest honor presented by the Area Agency on Aging, District 7 (AAA.7).

The award is given for dedication, commitment, and support to seniors and those with disabilities in southern Ohio. It is named in memory of William A. Jenkins, a native of Gallia County who helped build the aging network in southern Ohio through AAA.7.
