Issue 8

March 2012

Greetings!

Today, March 8, marks National Agriculture Day 2012. According to the Agriculture Council of America, which organizes the event, each year producers, agricultural associations, corporations, universities, government agencies and countless others across America join together to recognize the contributions of agriculture. As a member of the Alliance to Feed the Future, an organization coordinated by the International Food Information Council (IFIC), IIT IFSH was counted among those marking the day in a press release issued by the group.

The mission of the Alliance to Feed the Future is to multiply the impact of separate efforts that build understanding of food production and technology issues among key stakeholders to balance the public dialogue on modern agriculture and large-scale food production. IIT IFSH is proud to be a part of this coalition, whose goals are so in line with our institute's core values: to promote agriculture and food across all sectors of the food value chain in a coordinated effort, and to tell the true story of modern food production. I encourage you to visit the alliance's website and find out more about how organizations like ours are making a difference .

Best regards,

Robert E. Brackett, PhD

IIT Vice President and IFSH Director

ALLIANCE ACTIVITIES

IIT IFSH Launches FDA Funded Sprout Safety Alliance alfalfa sprouts

Illinois Institute of Technology's Institute for Food Safety and Health (IIT IFSH) will coordinate the Sprout Safety Alliance (SSA)

designed to assist sprout growers and producers in identifying and implementing best practices in the safe production of sprouts.

The Sprout Safety Alliance is a one-year, $100,000 partnership grant funded by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Foods through the IIT IFSH-FDA collaborative agreement. The alliance will be housed at IIT IFSH, which introduced in 2011 a groundbreaking audit checklist to improve sprout safety along with on-site beta test results validating its effectiveness in a real-world setting via the institute's Sprout Safety Task Force.

The new public-private organization will develop core curriculum, training and outreach programs for stakeholders in the sprout production community to enhance the industry's understanding and implementation of pending sprout safety regulatory requirements.

The alliance coordinators are Stephen Grove, Ph.D., IIT IFSH Manager, Industry Projects, and Joy Johanson, MPH, Consumer Safety Officer, FDA's Center for Food Safety and Nutrition (CFSAN). The SSA Steering Committee consists of representatives from IIT IFSH, federal and state government agencies, academia, and trade associations. Development of subcommittees, governance and structure of the SSA are in progress.

IIT IFSH will host web pages for the alliance's progress updates. Materials are expected to become available in March 2012.

For a full press release announcing the SSA launch, please visit the IIT IFSH News page. Click here for details and fact sheets from FDA about the SSA and other FDA-related Alliances.

FSMA Recordkeeping Requirements: Are You Prepared?

Thursday, March 15, 2012 | 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. ET

It's been just over a year since President Obama signed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) into law. One component of implementation includes preparing for new requirements for recordkeeping accessibility and maintenance. With these new provisions comes a variety of new recordkeeping requirements for food suppliers and manufacturers. Knowledge of these recordkeeping requirements is critical and it is imperative that all food manufacturers are aware of the consequences of noncompliance. This webinar presents an in-depth look at the new recordkeeping requirements.

This webinar will address:

  • The historical context of what was required prior to enactment and the new record requirements under FSMA
  • Exploring future FDA inspections under FSMA preventive controls
  • Devising strategies for preparing and implementing record maintenance and access programs
  • Understanding how to start responding to record requests

Who Should Attend: Food manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, retailers, regulators, compliance and legal professionals, and quality affairs personnel who interact with FDA during inspections.

Illinois Institute of Technology's (IIT) Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH) is a one-of-a-kind applied food science research institute that provides stakeholders in government, industry and academia the opportunity to develop and exchange knowledge and expertise to address key issues in food safety, food defense and nutrition. Located at IIT's Moffett Campus in Bedford Park, IL, IFSH is also home to the FDA CFSAN Division of Food Processing Science and Technology. For more, visit www.iit.edu/ifsh
