Online Registration Open for 2011 IFSH Annual Meeting
The Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH) at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), will hold its Annual Meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 11-12, 2011, at the Hyatt Lodge at McDonald's Campus in Oak Brook, Illinois.
IFSH members and partners are invited to register online by October 3 for the meeting, where stakeholders get the opportunity to interact with experts from IFSH, FDA and industry. The program will cover topics such as new regulatory initiatives, upcoming FDA-IFSH collaborative efforts, new food-related activities at IIT, and an update on how IFSH is expanding to help members meet the challenges of today's food manufacturing environment.

Nominations for 2011 IFSH Award Due September 16
Nominations are being accepted for the 2011 IFSH Award, which recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made "outstanding contributions to food safety across government, academia, and industry."
The 2011 award will be presented at the IFSH Annual Meeting on October 11 and will consist of an engraved plaque and gift. Nominations will be evaluated by a selection panel consisting of representatives from FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FDA CFSAN), the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and the food industry.
Previous award recipients are Dr. Jon DeVries, General Mills (2005), Dr. Michael Cirigliano, Unilever (2006), Dr. Richard Whiting, FDA/CFSAN (2007), and Dr. Katherine Swanson, Ecolab (2008), Dr. Paul Hall, AIV Microbiology and Food Safety Consultants (2009), and Mr. Daniel Brown, Hormel Foods (2010).
The qualifications for nominees are:
- Must be actively involved in the field of food safety and technology within academia, government or industry.
- Must have demonstrated outstanding contributions to food safety and technology across government, academia and industry.
- Should be employed by a current member or collaborator of IFSH.
Nominations materials should include a cover letter and a copy of the candidate's CV and should provide specific information about length of service and positions held in the food safety and technology profession; leadership roles and specific achievements or accomplishments in food safety across academia, industry and government; educational activities in food safety and technology; and participation in IFSH activities.
Please submit your nomination(s) for the 2011 IFSH Award via e-mail by Friday, September 16, 2011 to Catherine Nnoka, IFSH Director of Operations Support.

Student Enrollment in Food Science and Technology Courses on the Rise for Fall 2011
Forty-seven new students enrolled in IFSH's Masters degree programs for the Fall 2011 semester, bringing the total to 129 students, up from 96 students in the fall of 2010.
IFSH'S students represent 11 countries (China, Ghana, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the US). Fifty-nine are Masters of Science in Food Safety and Technology (FST) and Food Process Engineering (FPE) candidates, 56 are Professional Master candidates (non- thesis option), seven are enrolled in FST and FPE certificate programs, five are enrolled in the Food Processing Specialist Certificate Program and two are taking classes on a non-degree basis.
IFSH is also hosting two post-docs this year from Fuzhou University of China and the China Agricultural University. Both are supported by scholarships from their universities, and will be working on projects in IFSH's collaborative research portfolio.

Allergen Workshop on Managing Allergens in Dry Manufacturing
October 13, Deloitte Offices, Chicago, IL
This workshop, co-sponsored by Deloitte & Touche, LLC and IFSH, will feature key subject matter experts and food industry executives together to discuss challenges associated with the management of allergens balanced against operational, marketplace and regulatory demands and how to protect consumers and product brands.
On the Road
- On July 18, IFSH Director Dr. Robert Brackett participated in an expert panel conducted by RTI International for FDA to address study needs identified in the Food Safety Modernization Act. Experts were asked to assess the ranking and attribution of foodborne illness risk associated with different food product categories and food facilities.
