With a starting lineup featuring yearlings by sire-of-the-moment Bernardini as well as others by Champion Sires Giant's Causeway, Smart Strike, and Street Cry, Hidden Brook heads into the Keeneland September Sale with yet another strong contingent.

The Hidden Brook yearlings will sell on seven separate days beginning Sept. 13th, and comprises 39 colts and 27 fillies, representing both proven veteran sires and emerging freshman sires.

Sixteen yearlings lead off for Hidden Brook in Book 2, including colts by Bernardini, Big Brown, Corinthian, Dixie Union, Giant's Causeway, Malibu Moon, Scat Daddy, War Front, and fillies by Big Brown, Dynaformer, Johannesburg, Macho Uno, More Than Ready, and Street Cry.

The remaining sessions will feature yearlings by Any Given Saturday, Bernstein, Big Brown, Bluegrass Cat, City Zip, Congaree, Curlin, Discreet Cat, Flower Alley, Forestry, Freud, Ghostzapper, Hard Spun, Heatseeker, Henny Hughes, Holy Bull, Into Mischief, Johannesburg, Lion Heart, Macho Uno, Malibu Moon, Midnight Lute, Mr. Greeley, Notional, Officer, Pleasant Tap, Quiet American, Rockport Harbor, Smart Strike, Shakespeare, Street Boss, Tale of the Cat, Touch Gold, Unusual Heat, and War Front.

Serg

Sergio de Sousa

Managing Partner Sergio de Sousa says the 2011 consignment forms a strong group across the board. "On the whole, we are very impressed with our crop of yearlings, and with their forward progress." Sergio further points out that more than half of Hidden Brook's 2011 stakes horses came from yearling sale consignments, including eight Grade 1 horses.

The entire Hidden Brook yearling consignment may be accessed via a link on the left side of this Newsletter.

Pacific Classic yields 10th G1 performer

statelyvictor
Stately Victor ($797,226) became Hidden Brook's 10th G1 performer

of 2011, in the $1,000,000

Pacific Classic-G1

The $1,000,000 Pacific Classic-G1 produced a milestone for the Hidden Brook program, when sales graduates filled two of the top four spots, including Hidden Brook's tenth Grade 1 performer of the season.

Stately Victor racked up his first Grade 1 blacktype of the season in the Classic, following multiple Graded stakes performances across the continent. In 2010, the $797,226-earner won the Blue Grass S.-G1 and competed in the Kentucky Derby-G1 and Belmont-G1. Millionaire Game On Dude, meanwhile, was a nose behind Stately Victor, after winning the Santa Anita H.-G1 and running second by a whisker in the Hollywood Gold Cup-G1 earlier this year. Hidden Brook consigned both colts to the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale.

On the same day and surface as the Pacific Classic, another Hidden Brook yearling graduate won a major Graded race, when Celtic New Year battled to victory in the $200,000 Del Mar H.-G2. It was the first Graded win for the 4-year old, who is one of 15 Hidden Brook stakes winners this year.

Through Labor Day, 36 stakes horses, representing 20 individual clients, were either purchased, sold, raised, foaled, and/or raced in partnership by Hidden Brook.

53% Strike Rate

Inside the WINNER'S CIRCLE

with ED FEW

ED

A new feature for The HIDDEN BROOK TIMES is a Q&A with

some of our valued clients. Texas businessman Ed Few has been

with Hidden Brook for four years, primarily as a yearling consignor. Here are a few of his thoughts on

the Thoroughbred industry and

life in general.

Born: November 19, 1938

Residence: Jasper, Texas

Primary business: Owner Jasper Oil Company.

Also owns and operates 8 convenience stores;

has interest in motels and concrete companies

How many horses do you currently own? I have nine mares, eight weanlings, and five yearlings. And I have some interest in a few racehorses. I primarily breed to sell, and I only sell what I like. I keep the cheaper horses actually. Those we race go to a good trainer, with the goal of making the mare so the foals will sell well later.

You are the breeder of 2011 two-year-old stakes winner Lil Cherokee, who was undefeated in his first two starts. Tell us about him. I raised him and consigned him to the sales. He's out of one of my better mares, and he became her fourth stakes horse. We kept him to race when he didn't meet his reserve. He won his first two starts this year at Lone Star, including the $88,000 Texas Sale Futurity. We sent him to Prairie Meadows for a stakes there in July, but he was hung on the outside and did not run very well. I am looking forward to bringing him back to the races. He's currently stabled at Churchill Downs with trainer Bret Calhoun. If he continues to train well in the mornings, he will be back in the entry box very soon...We'll be looking for a race with a little more distance of ground.

What got you started in the Thoroughbred industry? We always had riding horses growing up. The land we live on, 100 acres, has been in my family since 1859. So we've always had horses. I started in Quarter Horses, but I didn't have much success. Then we started raising Thoroughbreds, mostly to sell as yearlings.

What drew you to Hidden Brook? I knew Dan Mallory (the late Kentucky horseman who died in the crash of flight 5191). After the accident, I could not decide to stay in or get out of the business. John Adger (former Texas Thoroughbred Association President and a client of Hidden Brook), introduced me to Sergio, and I just felt comfortable with him, and later, with the other members of the team.

How has the Hidden Brook experience been different

for you? I honestly enjoy it so much more now. I like to be around people I enjoy, and this group are people who I like. And I am also doing better since I've been associated with them. But the one thing that really stands out for me is the kind of class and commitment they show. I have been on the board of the Texas Thoroughbred Breeders for about 12 years, and unbeknownst to me, I was being given a lifetime achievement award. Lo and behold, Sergio shows up out of the blue. I thought maybe he was here to watch Lil Cherokee run in the stake. But no, he came all this way, and spent several days here, just to honor me. That just says something extra about them, about their class.

What has been your most exciting moment in racing? Any time you win a stakes with one you've raised and foaled-that's just really special. You've got their mama, and they are a member of the family.

We know you are busy. Before we go, tell us just a few things about yourself: First thing you read in the morning? Newspaper. Houston Chronicle.

Favorite sports team? Dallas Cowboys.

Favorite place to eat and favorite meal? Seafood, especially on the gulf coast. Love good seafood.

Thank you Ed Few, for giving us a few minutes in the

Winner's Circle.
