Walk Now for Autism Speaks is a fun-filled, family friendly event consisting of a 5K route, one-mile route, Community Resource Fair, Kid's Zone, main stage entertainment, and more. The event raises money for autism research. For more information go to www.walknowforautismspeaks.org
 
1 in 25 Adolescents Take Antidepressants
 
According to a newly released study by the CDC, 1 in 25 adolescents take antidepressant medication, and approximately 1 in 10 Americans 12 years of age and older take antidepressants. Other key findings include:
  • Females are more likely to take antidepressants than are males, and non-Hispanic white persons are more likely to take antidepressants than are non-Hispanic black and Mexican-American persons.
  • About one-third of persons with severe depressive symptoms take antidepressant medication.
  • More than 60% of Americans taking antidepressant medication have taken it for 2 years or longer, with 14% having taken the medication for 10 years or more.
  • Less than one-third of Americans taking one antidepressant medication and less than one-half of those taking multiple antidepressants have seen a mental health professional in the past year.

          Sarah Hanchett, LCSW
 

Sarah Hanchett has a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development from Brigham Young University and a Masters of Social Work from Arizona State University. Sarah is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and is currently our Lead Therapist. She has worked with adolescents in a wilderness treatment program and then as a manager of a therapeutic group home for girls. She provided therapy for families in crisis to assist in keeping their children in the home and to reunify children with their families. Main areas of clinical focus include depression, anxiety, family communication, adoption issues, and children who have experienced trauma, such as physical or sexual abuse. Sarah has attended the Southwest Schools Conference from 2007-2009 and has recently attended trainings to include attachment-based trauma resolution for children, emotional incest, trauma fragmentation, The Seven Challenges®(drug and alcohol management), anger management, suicide and self-mutilation: stopping the pain, ethics and law.
