Accuracy and Precision

Accuracy means hitting what you're aiming at.

Precision means hitting the same spot repeatedly.

To measure precision, shooters often refer to how many minutes of angle a firearm will hold.

A minute of angle subtends roughly 1 inch for every 100 yards of range.

What most folks forget about is that in addition to the firearm's precision, you also need to account for the precision of the ammunition and the precision of the shooter.

So in the diagram below, X is the center of the target.  If the precision of the ammunition is 1 minute, that means a bullet fired from a perfect gun by a perfect shooter under perfect conditions will hit within a 1 inch diameter circle around the X (blue line) at a range on 100 yards.

 3 mins

If the ammunition is fired by a 1-minute gun, then that reduces precision by another inch per 100 yards.

If the now 2-minute ammo-firearm system is fired by a 1-minute shooter, that adds another inch to the diameter of the circle.

So now even though you say you've got a 1-minute gun, you've really got a 3-minute system!

Bottom line:  So that's the science, but here's the art:  A good shooter can correct for variances in conditions and compensate for an imprecise system to maintain accuracy even with less than ideal precision!

Thought of the Month:  Dag

"Your position never gives you the right to command.  It only imposes on you the duty of so living your life that others can receive your orders without being humiliated."

Senior Forest Leaders at Andersonville

The Regional Leadership Team of the Southern Region, U.S. Forrest Service, participated in a staff ride to Andersonville National Historic Site on 9 August 2011.  This latest of our OMNA staff rides is entitled "Moral Imperatives for Senior Leaders."  To review a couple of the take-aways from this staff ride, see Remembrances of Andersonville at the bottom of this newsletter.

RLT at Andersonville

On September 13th, OMNA will lead a second Andersonville Staff RIde for Southern Region Fire and Aviation leaders.

Planning Wilderness and Shiloh

October will be a busy month for the OMNA Team, with two back-to-back staff rides.

First is the 1864-1865 Overland and Petersburg Campaigns contrasting the leadership and management styles of R.E. Lee and U.S. Grant.  This will be the second Overland staff ride OMNA has done for the U.S. Naval Academy's Master's program in Leadership

Second is the Battle of Shiloh for mid-level wildland firefighters from throughout the Southern Region.  Craig Huddleston will join our team to support four separate seminar groups at Shiloh, comprised of firefighters from USFS, USFWS, NPS/BIA, and State Agencies.

Some thoughts on leadership...

Fr. Peter Whelan

Cavalry corps commander George Stoneman felt a moral imperative to take a great risk in leading a cavalry expedition to try and free the prisoners at Andersonville.  He convinced Army Group commander William T. Sherman to authorize this project, and took great personal risk in leading the expedition.
However, zeal for this moral imperative overshadowed proper planning and resourcing of the effort, contributing to its failure.

Lesson learned:  Take great risks for great opportunities, but remember to create conditions for success through fierce concentration and coordinated planning of the project from initiation through to completion.  Identify all the stakeholders and gain their trust and support.

Father Peter Whelan understood the situation, decided to take action, and effectively communicated in order to effect action.  He placed himself in harm's way at great personal risk.  He
gained and maintained trust of stakeholders at all levels of responsibility, and enabled the church to provide resources to preserve life and dignity of prisoners where the state had failed to do so.  Both in New York and in Andersonville, Peter Whelan shared sacrifice, built trust relationships, gathered and distributed necessary resources.

Lesson learned:  Share in the fellowship of sufferings with those entrusted to your care, build trust in order to influence stakeholders at all levels, and provide necessary resources to sustain and nurture people in body, mind, and spirit.
